NHL Game Summary - Ottawa at New Jersey

(Wednesday, December 18th)

Final Score: New Jersey 5, Ottawa 2

Newark, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - Damien Brunner and Eric Gelinas each posted a goal and assist as New Jersey downed Ottawa, 5-2, at Prudential Center.

Stephen Gionta and Reid Boucher lit the lamp for the Devils, who have won two in a row and three of five. Jaromir Jagr also tallied, moving him past Steve Yzerman into eighth place on the NHL's all-time list (693).

Martin Brodeur made 23 stops as New Jersey ended a four-game losing streak to its Wednesday opponent.

"Liked the win, liked the goals -- I liked our effort," said Devils head coach Peter DeBoer. "I thought we showed up and played a real solid game."

Colin Greening and Milan Michalek scored for the Senators, who couldn't maintain momentum from a 3-2 overtime victory against St. Louis on Monday.

Robin Lehner stopped 28 shots in defeat.

In his first appearance since missing the last 11 games with a sprained right ankle, Gionta needed just 122 seconds to put his team on the board, slipping a shot home from the right side while New Jersey was shorthanded.

Boucher picked up his first career tally at the 12:08 mark, picking up a Gelinas rebound and scoring from the right post to make it 2-0 for the Devils.

"It means a lot. It's something I'll remember for the rest of my life and it's a special moment," Boucher admitted.

Jagr converted a Travis Zajac pass on the backhand during a power play for a 3-0 game at 2:08 of the second period, then Greening got the Sens on the board during their own advantage at 5:30 with a tip in of Mika Zibanejad's try from the left circle.

Brunner put the hosts up 4-1 with a great individual effort. He outmuscled Ottawa's Jared Cowen deep inside the offensive zone, took the puck away, made a slick move on Lehner and slid the puck inside the left post with 27.2 seconds before intermission.

Ottawa climbed within two at 8:35 of the third on Michalek's backhander, but the momentum shifted back to the hosts only 45 seconds later when Gelinas lifted one past Lehner from the left circle.

"We're a long, long way from being an elite team," said Senators head coach Paul MacLean.

Game Notes

The Devils last bested the Senators by a 4-2 count on April 7, 2012 ... Jagr needs one more tally to equal Mark Messier for seventh place ... The 41- year-old future Hall of Famer was also credited with his 122nd career game- winning goal, surpassing Gordie Howe for the most in NHL history ... New Jersey hosts Anaheim on Friday, and Ottawa begins a three-game homestand Thursday against Florida.
