NHL Game Summary - Philadelphia at Detroit

(Wednesday, December 4th)

Final Score: Philadelphia 6, Detroit 3

Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Sean Couturier scored twice and added a pair of assists, and the Philadelphia Flyers used five unanswered goals to rally past the Detroit Red Wings, 6-3, at Joe Louis Arena.

Philadelphia trailed 3-1 late in the second period, but got a goal apiece from Matt Read, Claude Giroux and Scott Hartnell and a pair from Couturier to secure just its second win in its last 20 regular-season road games against the Red Wings.

"We knew we had to come out flying and get pucks on the net," Read said of the team's comeback. "It was just a very gritty comeback win by us and something we can build off of."

Read and Hartnell each added two assists, Giroux and Steve Downie donated two points apiece and Steve Mason made 32 saves for the Flyers, who have won three of their last four games.

Tomas Tatar tallied twice and Johan Franzen also lit the lamp for the Red Wings, who had a four-game win streak halted.

Jimmy Howard allowed five goals on 33 shots in defeat.

Tatar's second tally of the night gave Detroit a 3-1 lead at 10:13 of the second, but Read responded with 3:22 left in the period when he roofed the disc from the low right side off a nice feed from Couturier.

After Detroit's Stephen Weiss went off for hooking at 4:17 of the third, Giroux's wrister from above the left circle slipped through a screen and snuck past Howard to tie the game at 3-3 just 58 seconds into the man advantage.

Couturier put the Flyers in front at 8:28 when he camped out in front and one- touched Downie's pass from the right point into the back of the net.

Hartnell's power-play tally 90 seconds later doubled Philadelphia's lead and Couturier found the empty net from the red line with just under a minute left to account for the final margin.

"The third period wasn't good enough," Detroit head coach Mike Babcock admitted. "They were better than us. They were better than us because they lit us up on the power play."

Early on, Tatar put Detroit on top just past the midpoint of the first with his fourth goal of the season, but with the Flyers on a power play shortly after, Downie's wrister from between the circles snuck past Howard to tie the game.

Franzen put the Red Wings back in front with a heavy slapper from atop the left circle 8:24 into the second, and Tatar scored just under two minutes later with Detroit skating on a 5-on-3 to make it 3-1 Red Wings.

Game Notes

Philadelphia's only other win in Detroit since Nov. 4, 1988 came on Jan. 2, 2011 ... Couturier recorded his first career four-point game ... Philadelphia improved to 6-6-2 on the road this season ... Detroit played its first game without center Henrik Zetterberg, who is expected to miss at least the next two weeks with a herniated disc in his back ... Philadelphia finished 3-for-3 on the power play, while Detroit went 1-for-7 on the man advantage.
