NHL Game Summary - Ottawa at Florida

(Tuesday, March 25th)

Final Score: Florida 3, Ottawa 2 (SO)

Sunrise, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Roberto Luongo made 37 saves in regulation and overtime and had two more stops in a shootout, backstopping the Florida Panthers to a 3-2 win over the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday.

Vincent Trocheck and Brandon Pirri beat Ottawa's Robin Lehner in the shootout -- Trocheck with a sharp deke and Pirri on a snap shot through the legs.

After Kyle Turris rattled a goal off the post and in, Jason Spezza fired wide on Ottawa's second chance and Luongo ended the game with a glove save on Milan Michalek's backhand as he did a split in the crease.

Luongo also made a point-blank save on defenseman Marc Methot in overtime to help the Panthers snap a three-game losing streak and win for only the third time in their last 10 games (3-6-1).

Sean Bergenheim and Trocheck scored second-period goals after Mark Stone and Clarke MacArthur had given Ottawa a 2-0 lead. All four goals came in a 6:21 span in the period.

Lehner had 39 saves for the Senators, who were coming off a 4-3 shootout win over Tampa Bay on Monday to snap a six-game losing streak. The had won 13 of the previous 16 meetings with the Panthers.

"It is what it is," Lehner said of the loss. "We lost that one but I thought it was a good effort."

Bobby Ryan, who leads Ottawa with 23 goals, missed his second game with a lower-body injury.

The Panthers wasted a two-minute power play in overtime after Ottawa's Patrick Wiercioch went off for hooking.

Earlier, they couldn't get anything past Lehner despite 10 shots in an active first period. Hot as they were, the Senators came out hotter, peppering Luongo with 20 shots. He stopped all of them.

"We planned to come out hard in the first period," said Trocheck. "They came out twice as hard."

Stone eventually broke through 11:34 into the second period at the end of a tic-tac-toe play with Erik Karlsson and Turris. MacArthur made it 2-0 Ottawa less than five minutes later with a deflected shot on a power play.

But the Panthers tied the score in a flash, getting two goals 23 seconds apart. Bergenheim beat Lehner on a one-timer from the right side and Trocheck scored on a 2-on-1 to make it 2-2 with 2:05 left in the period.
