'Canes try to stay hot in Montreal

(SportsNetwork.com) - The Carolina Hurricanes will try to match their longest winning streak of the season on Tuesday night as they visit the Montreal Canadiens.

The Hurricanes have won 10 of their last 13 games, including a season-high five in a row from Dec. 31-Jan. 9. Carolina has won each of its last four games, including last night's 3-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The Blue Jackets scored twice in the opening period and the Hurricanes were held without a goal themselves until Eric Staal scored twice in the span of a minute just a little past the midway point of the third period.

Jordan Staal then put home the game-winner 1:47 after Eric Staal tied the game and Anton Khudobin ended with 22 saves.

"It was a good comeback," Eric Staal said. "We felt like it was going to be a close game. We didn't want to spot them two early, but we did. We stayed with it and got better as the game went on. I thought we got stronger and stronger, and then eventually it broke through in the third."

With the win, Carolina jumped a point ahead of Columbus and Philadelphia for third place in the Metropolitan Division.

Eric Staal has four goals and five assists over a six-game point streak, while Alexander Semin had an assist versus the Blue Jackets to give him six goals and three helpers over his own six-game point run.

The Canadiens have matched a season high with four straight losses, getting shut out 5-0 by the Washington Capitals on Saturday. Carey Price was chased from the net halfway through the second period after allowing four goals on 26 shots.

Peter Budaj stopped 7-of-8 shots in relief.

"This was a tough game because we were making too many mental mistakes," said Price, whose club gave Washington eight power plays. "Our support wasn't good enough and we need to battle better as a team. Right now, we're not doing that."

With 59 points, Montreal is one point back of Toronto for third place in the Atlantic Division.

The Canadiens won all three of their games versus the Hurricanes last season, but Carolina claimed a 5-4 victory in overtime when the clubs met on Dec. 31.

Montreal has won eight of the last 12 overall in this series as well as five of the past six played at the Bell Centre.
