NHL Game Summary - Vancouver at Edmonton

(Tuesday, January 21st)

Final Score: Vancouver 2, Edmonton 1

Edmonton, AB (SportsNetwork.com) - Zack Kassian scored what proved to be the game-winner 7:59 into the second period, as the Vancouver Canucks edged the Edmonton Oilers, 2-1, on Tuesday at Rexall Place.

Kellan Lain scored his first NHL goal to open the scoring in the first period, while Roberto Luongo stopped 28 shots for the Canucks, who were playing without head coach John Tortorella and star forward Henrik Sedin.

Tortorella received a 15-game suspension on Monday, two days after he was seen attempting to get into the Flames' locker room during the first intermission of a game against Calgary that featured a line brawl just two seconds into the game. Assistant coach Mike Sullivan was behind the bench in Tortorella's absence.

Meanwhile, Sedin saw his streak of 679 consecutive games played come to an end due to a rib injury that caused him to leave the Calgary contest early.

Jordan Eberle netted Edmonton's lone goal late in the third, while Ben Scrivens supplied 25 saves for the Oilers, who have lost five straight.

Lain lit the lamp 5:14 into the opening frame, pounding in a rebound off a right circle blast from Dale Weise to give Vancouver an early edge.

"Everyone was so thrilled for Kellan," Sullivan said of Lain notching his first marker. "It's been a tough couple of days."

The Canucks doubled their cushion nearly eight minutes into the middle period when Ryan Kesler won a scrum behind the Edmonton net and slid the disc to the high slot for Kassian, who ripped a wrister off the post and in to make it 2-0 at 7:59.

Eberle hammered one home amid a scrum in front of the Vancouver cage at 15:00 of the third to bring the Oilers within one, but Luongo stood tall between the pipes down the stretch to maintain the Canucks' one-goal edge.

"We were right there even with them," Edmonton head coach Dallas Eakins said of his team's late charge. "I thought the game started to tilt our way in the third period."

Game Notes

Sedin hadn't missed a game since Mar. 19, 2004. His consecutive games played streak was the sixth longest in NHL history ... Vancouver has won all three games against Edmonton this season, outscoring Edmonton 12-3 ... Both teams went 0-for-4 on the power play ... Eberle scored his 17th of the season.
