NHL Game Summary - NY Islanders at Calgary

(Friday, March 7th)

Final Score: Calgary 4, NY Islanders 3

Calgary, AB (SportsNetwork.com) - Joe Colborne scored twice in a three-goal third-period burst which lifted Calgary over the New York Islanders, 4-3, at the Saddledome.

Sean Monahan also tallied during the rally, while Markus Granlund added a first-period short-handed goal for the Flames, winners in seven of their last 11 overall.

Joni Ortio came up with 23 saves for the win.

"As a team we were turning it over too much in the first two periods," said Calgary forward Mark Giordano. "But then we rallied in the third and it felt good to get this win."

Colin McDonald, Kyle Okposo and Brock Nelson lit the lamp for the Islanders, who fell to 1-1-1 on their four-game Canadian road trip.

Anders Nilsson made only 19 stops in the loss.

The Flames successfully killed off a 5-on-3 early in the third period, with the only blip in the plan an Okposo blast which rang off the post. Still, the hosts trailed by two.

Colborne drew them within 3-2 at 11:29, then Monahan accepted a T.J. Galiardi feed and tucked a backhander between Nilsson's pads at 14:22 for a 3-3 deadlock.

Calgary took the lead for good with 4:19 remaining, after Colborne's tip in front of a Giordano point offering slid up Nilsson's stick and hit the net inside the right post. The 24-year-old recorded his first career multi-goal effort.

Due to forechecking pressure, Nilsson was unable to exit for an extra skater until the final seconds, and by then, the Isles had no further offensive push.

"It's mental at this point," said Okposo. "We give up one then we sit back and let them back in the game. We have to say 'enough?s enough.'"

Granlund scored while shorthanded just after the two-minute mark of the first to give the hosts an early lead.

Ryan Strome was behind the Calgary net when he fed back in front for McDonald's successful shot to tie the score at 15:26.

Okposo's strike off a pass from Michael Grabner to cap a 2-on-1 break just after 6 1/2 minutes elapsed in the second put the Islanders ahead, and it was a 3-1 game for the visitors at 12:08 when Nelson's rising shot beat Ortio to the short side at the right post.

Game Notes

Coming into play, the Islanders had won three of their previous four in Calgary since January of 2002, but the Flames hold a record of 18-6-1 with five ties against New York at home since 1980 ... Prior to the contest, Calgary honored former star forward Joe Nieuwendyk (1986-95). The Cornell product won the 1988 Calder Trophy as the NHL's top rookie, and tallied 314 goals with 302 assists in 577 regular-season games, adding 32 scores and 60 points over 66 postseason tilts that included a Stanley Cup in 1989 ... The Islanders have surrendered a two-goal lead on 14 occasions this season.
