NHL Game Summary - Detroit at NY Rangers

(Sunday, March 9th)

Final Score: NY Rangers 3, Detroit 0

New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Henrik Lundqvist posted a 30-save shutout for his 300th career win as the New York Rangers downed the Detroit Red Wings, 3-0, at Madison Square Garden on Sunday.

Brian Boyle opened the scoring just over five minutes into the game, while Chris Kreider potted a pair of third-period goals in support of Lundqvist, who tied Ed Giacomin's franchise record with his 49th career shutout.

Lundqvist, who stopped 38 shots in a 1-0 whitewash of the Red Wings on Jan. 16, now trails Mike Richter by just one win for the most in franchise history.

"It's well deserved," Kreider said of Lundqvist reaching 300 wins. "He's the best goalie in the world. Hopefully he'll get 300 more."

Jimmy Howard allowed all three goals on 31 shots for Detroit, which has dropped three of its last four games.

"(We) never made it hard on Lundqvist," Detroit head coach Mike Babcock said. "I was disappointed with our group. As a coaching staff, we didn't have them well prepared."

Boyle got the Rangers on the board 5:14 into the tilt after a counterattack into the Detroit zone saw John Moore get his shot blocked in the high slot.

Moore's stick split in two and went flying, but the puck landed right on the tape of Boyle, who wheeled around in the slot and slipped a shot under Howard for a 1-0 lead.

Following a scoreless second stanza, the Rangers doubled their lead just 14 seconds into the third when Kreider camped out in front and tipped in Ryan McDonagh's left-point blast to make it 2-0.

Kreider registered his second of the game with 7:49 to play, converting a 2- on-1 rush with a wrister from the left circle off a feed from Derek Stepan.

The lead was more than enough for Lundqvist, who stopped 12 shots over the final 20 minutes to complete the shutout.

Game Notes
