NHL Game Summary - Nashville at Calgary

(Friday, January 24th)

Final Score: Calgary 5, Nashville 4 (SO)

Calgary, AB (SportsNetwork.com) - Eric Nystrom lit the lamp a career-high four times for the Nashville Predators, but the Calgary Flames scored two late goals and Sean Monahan registered the winner in an eventual 5-4 shootout victory.

After each team failed to convert once in the shootout, Jiri Hudler quickly moved in on net and roofed a backhander over Devan Dubnyk before another set of shooters missed. Roman Josi prolonged the shootout after he moved right to left and faking Dubnyk to score through his five hole.

Monahan went through the middle and slid the puck through the legs of Dubnyk before Ryan Ellis was stopped by Reto Berra to end the game.

David Jones supplied two goals, while Mark Giordano and Mikael Backlund each added a power-play goal in Calgary's second straight win. After Karri Ramo allowed three goals on 12 shots, Berra made 12 saves in relief for the win.

"Great third period. I think we know we are dealing with a lot of young players and there's not a better way to show character than we did tonight," said Calgary head coach Bob Hartley. "Reto came in and shut the door and made some pretty big saves and got the game in a shootout. Jiri and Monny gave us some big goals."

Dubnyk stopped 27 shots for the Predators, who won four of five games entering the contest.

Nystrom weaved through defenders to score on Nashville's first shot of the game 1:51 into the opening stanza, but Calgary answered less than two minutes later when Giordano's shot from the point found the back of the net.

"It was just one of those nights. It's just frustrating that it was on the short end of the stick. Its a game we wish we could have back," said Nystrom, who was selected 10th overall by Calgary in the 2002 draft. "It's nice scoring goals, but not when it's on the losing side."

Nashville scored less than two minutes into the second. Ramo had difficulty handling a shot from Josi on the red line. Nystrom was present to slide the puck through Ramo's five hole for his second of the night.

Paul Gaustad took the puck past the left circle and fired a shot right before reaching the goal line. The shot deflected off Nystrom and into the net at the six-minute mark of the second.

Calgary got one back 1:24 into the third. Matt Stajan intercepted a pass from Seth Jones and dropped the puck back to Jones, who wristed a shot past Dubnyk from the slot.

Nystrom tallied his fourth of the night 10:47 into the third. Cullen went wide to enter the Calgary zone and fired a shot from the right side before Nystrom stuck out his stick to deflect the puck and fool Berra.

Calgary pulled back to within one with their third power-play goal of the night. Kris Russell drifted over to the middle of the blue line and slapped a shot that was redirected by Backlund in front of the net and 69 seconds later, Brodie unleashed a laser from the left point on a screened Dubnyk to even the game at four.

Game Notes

Nystrom's performance was the first four-goal game in team history ... The last four-goal performance in the NHL came six days earlier when Martin St. Louis did it in a 5-4 loss to San Jose ... Giordano extended his point streak to a career-high six games ... Calgary went 3-for-5 on the power play.
