Trotz out as Predators coach

Nashville, TN (SportsNetwork.com) - The Nashville Predators will have a new coach next season, as the club on Monday announced that Barry Trotz will not return behind the bench.

Trotz is the only coach the Predators' organization has ever known, leading the franchise since its inception in 1998. He was the NHL's longest-tenured coach and the second-longest in North American major pro sports, behind only Gregg Popovich of the NBA's San Antonio Spurs.

"I want to thank Barry for everything he has done for our franchise," said Predators president and general manager David Poile in a statement Monday. "He has been the face and voice of our team for 15 years. He created, developed and lived The Predator Way -- on the ice, in the office and in the community. There could be no finer ambassador for the Predators or Nashville than Barry Trotz. He has laid a foundation and culture that will benefit the next coach of the Nashville Predators."

The Predators were 38-32-12 this past season and finished three points behind Dallas for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Nashville missed the postseason for the second straight year after reaching the playoffs in six of the previous seven seasons.

"Our organization has high expectations and we have not met them in the past two seasons," Poile added. "Our goal is to return to the playoffs with the ultimate goal of contending for the Stanley Cup. We know that once we get into the playoffs, anything is possible."

Trotz had a record of 557-479-160 with the Predators and a mark of 19-31 in the playoffs. Nashville advanced past the first round of the playoffs just twice.

The Predators said Trotz has been offered a position within the organization's hockey operations department.
