NHL Preview from The Sports Network

Tuesday, December 31st (All times Eastern)

Philadelphia Flyers (19-16-4) at Calgary Flames (14-19-6), 9 p.m.

(SportsNetwork.com) - Claude Giroux and the Philadelphia Flyers look to remain perfect on their road trip as they play for a second straight night in Tuesday's meeting with the Calgary Flames.

The Flyers have begun their six-game swing with consecutive 4-3 shootout wins over Edmonton and Vancouver. Their victory over the Canucks on Monday night featured a stellar performance from goaltender Steve Mason and a late goal by Brayden Schenn.

Mason made 41 saves and stopped all three skaters he faced in the shootout. He gave up a go-ahead goal with 2:48 to play when his blocker save went off teammate Luke Schenn and into the net.

However, Luke's younger brother Brayden scored with 46.8 seconds to go in regulation and Mason on the bench for an extra attacker.

Giroux and Mark Streit added goals and Vinny Lecavalier had the lone shootout tally as the Flyers won their third straight and fifth in their past six overall. They are also now 8-9-4 on the road this season.

"We need to defend a lot better than we did tonight," said Philadelphia head coach Craig Berube.

Giroux, meanwhile, pushed his point streak to nine straight games. He has six goals and 11 assists on the run and 37 points in 39 games this season.

With the Flyers playing on back-to-back nights, Ray Emery is likely to get the start in net and is 6-2-1 with a 1.43 goals against average and two shutouts in his career versus the Flames.

Philadelphia had better luck against Vancouver goaltender Eddie Lack than Calgary did in Sunday's 2-0 loss to the Canucks. Lack made 18 saves to post his second career shutout.

It was also the second game in a row the Flames where held without a goal. They opened a five-game homestand by scoring twice in the third period in a shootout win over St. Louis -- getting the tying goal with five seconds left in regulation -- but were then blanked 2-0 by Edmonton on Friday.

Calgary, which has lost six of its last seven, has been shut out three times in the past six games and got 28 saves from Reto Berra in Sunday's setback.

"Good scoring chances are tough to get right now," Flames coach Bob Hartley said. "We just have to keep working at it. We're wasting good performances from Berra."

Berra is expected to make his fourth straight start tonight and the first of his career versus the Flyers.

Calgary added some grit ahead of this game, swapping forward Greg Nemisz with the Carolina Hurricanes for forward Kevin Westgarth.

Westgarth is in his fifth NHL season and has appeared in 12 games for the Hurricanes this season without recording a point.

The Flyers have won four of their past six versus the Flames, including a 5-4 shootout triumph in Calgary when the clubs last met on Feb. 25, 2012. Philadelphia has won four straight as the road club in this series.
