Eaves shot helps Wings get past Caps in lengthy SO

Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Patrick Eaves scored in the seventh round of the shootout to help the Detroit Red Wings to a 4-3 win over the Washington Capitals in the opener of a home-and-home set on Friday.

The first six shooters on either side failed to find the net before Eaves buried a wrister into the left corner in the seventh round. Jay Beagle was then stopped by Jimmy Howard for the win.

"He has a lot of confidence as a player and always likes to help the team no matter what role he is in," said Detroit head coach Mike Babcock about Eaves. "Tonight he came through for us and he's felling really good right now."

Gustav Nyquist, Drew Miller and Danny DeKeyser all scored for the Red Wings, who had dropped their previous two. Jimmy Howard stopped 26 shots in the win.

Alex Ovechkin and Jason Chimera each posted a goal and an assist for the Capitals, who have dropped their past two games. Michal Neuvirth stopped 42 shots in the loss.

"We played a hard-fought game last night and they were resting," said Washington head coach Adam Oates. "We came in here and played a good game and got a point out of it. Their goalie just played better."

These two clubs will meet in Washington on Sunday afternoon.

Washington scored on the power play at 15:24 of the first period as Nicklas Backstrom sent a pass from the right circle between the skates of Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall and on the stick of Chimera, who had an easy slam- dunk at the left side.

Detroit scored at 2:09 of the second period as Luke Glendening whipped a pass from the left side to the front where Miller snapped the puck in.

The Red Wings then took a 2-1 lead at 18:21, as a left circle faceoff win went back to DeKeyser, who blasted in a one-timer from the high slot.

Washington tied the game at 8:09 of the third after Casey Wellman had his first shot stopped, then his second, but was able to put the third chance in from the left side for his second of the year.

A turnover at the left point by the Caps led to the Red Wings taking a 3-2 lead, as Nyquist picked up the puck in the neutral zone and skated down the right wing before cutting to the front and snapping a wrister in through a screen at 10:15.

Washington had a power play with 3:29 left, but failed to tie the game. However, the team was able to knot the score with seven seconds left and the goalie pulled, as John Carlson sent a pass from the right point to the left here Ovechkin one-timed it home for his 39th of the season.
