NHL Game Summary - Buffalo at Colorado

Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Jamie McGinn led the way with two goals and one assist, as Colorado whipped Buffalo, 7-1, at Pepsi Center.

Nathan MacKinnon totaled a goal and two helpers, Gabriel Landeskog tallied twice and Erik Johnson chipped in with three assists for the Avalanche, winners of three in a row and eight of 10 overall thanks to a season-high for offensive output.

Tyson Barrie and Marc-Andre Cliche also produced offense to back a 27-save effort by Semyon Varlamov.

"We gave our best in the first two periods. This is a good complete game. It was good to finish them off early and not let them back in," MacKinnon admitted.

Matt D'Agostini registered the lone goal for the Sabres, losers in eight of their last 10. Starter Ryan Miller was yanked after yielding five goals on 27 shots. Jhonas Enroth finished up by allowing two scores on 12 chances.

Colorado seized control by scoring three times in a span of just over five minutes in the opening period.

Barrie's backhander beat Miller with 7:37 played, McGinn tipped in a Johnson blast on a power play at 11:49, then Landeskog capped the burst 58 seconds later by tapping in a MacKinnon feed off the rush.

It was 4-0 for the hosts at 6:05 of the second, when McGinn's miss wide of the Buffalo net was tipped into the crease by Patrick Bordeleau and then popped home by Cliche for his first NHL score.

The Sabres solved Varlamov on the power play with 11:45 elapsed in the second, as D'Agostini flipped a loose puck home from atop the crease.

Colorado restored its four-goal margin on a Johnson-to-MacKinnon connection for another man-advantage marker with 3 1/2 minutes left before intermission.

Landeskog beat Enroth through the pads on the left wing to make it 6-1 for the Avalanche in the early portion of the third. McGinn added another tally just after the midway point of the period to cap the rout.

"They got that early jump, went up 3-0 in the first and never looked back," noted Sabres forward Marcus Foligno. "We were out there looking around. It's not a good feeling getting beat like this. There was nothing good about it."

Game Notes

Colorado has won seven in a row against Buffalo since a 6-4 defeat on Dec. 4, 2005 ... Cliche played in one game for the Kings and 47 with the Avalanche before recording his first score, accumulating five assists in that span ... MacKinnon, who posted his first career three-point effort, upped his NHL-best rookie mark to 40 points (20G, 20A) in 54 games ... Avs forwards Peter Stastny (ankle) and Alex Tanguay (knee) missed the contest ... The seven-goal outburst was Colorado's most in one contest since an identical 7-1 result against Minnesota on Mar. 6, 2012.
