NHL Game Summary - Detroit at Ottawa

(Thursday, February 27th)

Final Score: Detroit 6, Ottawa 1

Ottawa, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Johan Franzen registered a hat trick as the Detroit Red Wings posted a 6-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Thursday.

Riley Sheahan, Tomas Jurco and Tomas Tatar also scored for the Red Wings, who have won their first two games following the Olympic break and five of seven overall. Niklas Kronwall had three assists and Jonas Gustavsson made 37 saves.

"(Getting points) is all that matters," Kronwall said. "It doesn't always matter how we got them. All that matters is that we get them."

Bobby Ryan supplied the lone Ottawa goal, while Robin Lehner was pulled in the second period after surrendering six goals on 15 shots. Andrew Hammond made his NHL debut in relief and stopped all 11 shots he faced.

"They got a few goals pretty fast and it snowballed," Lehner said. "I think we all have to do better in our zone and I have to do better."

Hammond was recalled from Binghamton of the American Hockey League to back up Lehner because Craig Anderson returned home to Florida to be with his pregnant wife.

The Senators had gone 2-2-1 this month before the Olympic break.

Franzen struck twice during a four-goal first period. Twenty-nine seconds after Sheahan scored off a Cody Ceci giveaway, Franzen one-timed Gustav Nyquist's pass to make it 2-0 at 11:28.

The Swede potted a power-play goal 1:59 later, taking a pass from former Senators star Daniel Alfredsson and firing a wrister from the right circle.

Jurco made it 4-0 with two minutes remaining. A favorable bounce landed on his stick and he beat Lehner deep on the left wing.

The teams combined for three goals in a 1:15 span early in the second period.

Franzen roofed a shot from the right side to complete the hat trick at the 3:49. Ryan, who had a goal waved off in the first period because of a kicking motion, lit the lamp 30 seconds later before Tatar converted Jurco's behind- the-net pass at 5:04.

Game Notes

Detroit has won four straight at Ottawa ... The Senators begin a four-game road trip Sunday at Vancouver in the league's Heritage Classic. The contest will be played at BC Place, a facility that features a retractable roof.
