Johnson to start for Auburn in season opener

Auburn, AL (SportsNetwork.com) - Jeremy Johnson will be the starting quarterback for Auburn when the sixth-ranked Tigers take on Arkansas in the season opener for both teams on Saturday.

Head coach Gus Malzahn made the announcement on Tuesday.

"We have a lot of confidence in him. He knows the whole playbook," Malzahn said. "There's not one thing that I would say we're concerned about."

Johnson is starting in place of Nick Marshall, the first-string quarterback who is serving a penalty for a traffic stop involving marijuana over the summer. Marshall is expected to play at some point.

"I made a mistake and I'm just trying to gain my trust back from the coaches," Marshall said earlier this month. "I let my family down and I'm also trying to gain their trust back and also the Auburn fans.

"The incident that happened, it's just going to change me as a better man on and off the field."

Johnson becomes the eighth different season-opening starting quarterback in as many seasons for Auburn.

Marshall led the Tigers to the BCS national championship game. In 13 games last season, all starts, Marshall connected on 142-of-239 passes with 14 touchdowns and six interceptions. He also ran for 1,068 yards and 12 TDs.
