Lightning blanked by Bruins, lose Stamkos

Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Boston Bruins continued their mastery of Tampa Bay with a 3-0 blanking in a Veterans Day matinee, a contest that saw the Lightning's star sniper Steven Stamkos suffer a broken right tibia.

Stamkos was backchecking on a play in the Tampa Bay zone in the second period when he got tangled with Boston defenseman Dougie Hamilton. Stamkos fell to the ice and slid feet-first before his lower right leg slammed into the right post.

The 23-year-old forward, who was riding a six-game goal streak, tried to get up, but fell back to the ice in obvious pain. After being tended to by medical personnel, he was taken off on a stretcher with 7:11 remaining in the period and transported to a Boston hospital for X-rays.

"At this point Steven will be out indefinitely," Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman said in a statement. "The medical staff in Boston, in consultation with our team physicians, has made the decision to surgically repair the injury. The procedure is expected to take place tomorrow morning. The biggest concern for me, and the rest of the Lightning, is that decisions are made in Steven's best long-term interest, and we feel this is the appropriate course of action."

Later in the middle stanza, the Bruins got goals 20 seconds apart from Patrice Bergeron and Daniel Paille.

Jarome Iginla added an empty-net tally with 59 seconds remaining in the third period for the Bruins, who have won three games in a row and posted their seventh consecutive win against the Lightning.

Tuukka Rask recorded his 18th career shutout with 28 saves.

"After two periods they kept pushing, creating chances, so as a goalie you just try to maintain that lead," Rask said.

Anders Lindback stopped 23 shots for Tampa Bay in his first action since Oct. 27.

The Lightning have been one of the early season surprises in the NHL thus far. An integral component to their success has been Stamkos, who entered Monday tied for the league lead in goals (14) and points (23).

Tampa Bay leads the Eastern Conference with a 12-5-0 record, but three of its losses have come against Boston.

The Bruins broke the scoreless deadlock with 2:51 remaining in the second. Bergeron found a puck in a scrum down low and fired it behind Lindback.

Paille then scored off a rush shortly after the ensuing faceoff, driving hard to the crease and slipping a shot past Lindback.
