NHL Game Summary - Columbus at Washington

(Tuesday, November 12th)

Final Score: Washington 4, Columbus 3 (OT)

Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - Alex Ovechkin scored on a rebound 94 seconds into overtime, lifting the Washington Capitals to a 4-3 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday night.

Ovechkin's winner came after Mikhail Grabovski scored the tying goal with 1:45 left in regulation.

Joel Ward had a short-handed goal and John Carlson also scored for the Caps, who have won five in a row over the Blue Jackets. Braden Holtby had 24 saves.

Brandon Dubinsky scored shorthanded and Jared Boll and Cam Atkinson also lit the lamp for Columbus, which has dropped five in a row on the road and six of its last seven overall.

Columbus defenseman James Wisniewski tried to pinch Marcus Johansson against the left boards but Johansson got free for a backhand shot on Sergei Bobrovsky that was blocked.

Ovechkin was there for the rebound, scoring his 14th of the season as the Caps snapped a two-game losing streak.

Bobrovsky had 30 saves for the Blue Jackets.

"JoJo (Johansson) did a great job to fight through it. And after that I have to go to the net and find a rebound," said Ovechkin. "I get a lucky puck, (it) bounces right to my stick, and we go.

"It's always nice to score, and (with an) overtime goal you can feel your best."

The Capitals took a 2-1 lead on Ward's short-handed goal 8:56 into the third period after Bobrovsky misplayed the puck, but the Blue Jackets quickly went up 3-2.

Boll got a piece of Wisniewski's slap shot from the high right side with 8:38 to go, and Atkinson got behind Mike Green for a breakaway after the puck hopped over the Capitals defenseman's stick, making it 3-2 with 5:41 remaining.

As it turned out, that was enough time for Washington to tie it, which is what Grabovski did when he collected a rebound on the low right side and beat Bobrovsky under the crossbar on the near side.

"That's a playoff game," said Capitals coach Adam Oates. "It just happens to be now, but we need these points, and you have to put yourself into position. Hockey is getting that way every night. We've been talking about that for two weeks. Every night it's a grind."

Bobrovsky took a delay-of-game minor for sending the puck over the glass and the Blue Jackets went up 1-0 in the second period on Dubinsky's short-handed goal.

Dubinsky beat Troy Brouwer for the puck behind the net after a dump-in, went around the goal to Bobrovsky's right, shifted to his backhand and beat the goalie under the glove 7:50 into the period for his fifth of the season.

"We battled pretty hard," said Dubinsky.

Columbus defenseman Dalton Prout was backtracking, the puck behind him, when Martin Erat reached around him and poked a pass to Carlson, who scored his fourth goal of the season to tie the game with six minutes left in the second period.
