Talbot turns in another clean sheet as Rangers beat Preds

Nashville, TN (SportsNetwork.com) - Cameron Talbot posted his second consecutive shutout with a 17-save effort, and the New York Rangers ran their road winning streak to six games with a 2-0 verdict over the Nashville Predators at Bridgestone Arena.

Ryan McDonagh and Derek Stepan each netted goals to support Talbot, who stopped all 22 shots he faced in a 1-0 Rangers' victory at Montreal a week ago. Mats Zuccarello assisted on both New York markers.

"I could get used to this, for sure," Talbot said. "The guys have played unbelievably in front of me the past two games."

The Rangers' current run is their longest as the visitor since a six-game surge from Jan. 19-March 2, 2006.

Nashville had a string of three consecutive wins end despite a 32-save performance out of Marek Mazanec.

The Predators had piled up 13 goals over the course of their three-game tear, but generated little offense in a game in which the Rangers dominated puck possession much of the way.

That was especially true in the second period, when New York outshot Nashville by a 17-7 margin and recorded the initial goal of the evening.

While skating in the Nashville zone, Zuccarello worked the puck back to defenseman Dan Girardi for a long drive that McDonagh successfully redirected past Mazanec to break the scoreless deadlock with 6:47 left in the session.

"Our guys were focused and ready right from the start, and they executed really well," said Rangers head coach Alain Vigneault. "We managed the puck well and we didn't give Nashville a lot of scoring opportunities.

The Rangers continued to control the action in the third, holding the Preds to just five shots while successfully killing off a hooking call to Carl Hagelin early in the frame.

Later on, Stepan stole the puck from Viktor Stalberg near center ice to create a 2-on-1 with Zuccarello, who passed it back to his teammate for a wrister that got past a diving Mazanec 7:45 into the period.

Nashville never seriously threatened the rest of the way and had its fate sealed when Matt Cullen was sent off for slashing with under four minutes left.

"They didn't allow us to get any momentum," said Predators head coach Barry Trotz. "I didn't think we played great, but I didn't think we played poorly. [The Rangers] had a high compete level and a lot of team speed, and they tracked us down pretty good."

Game Notes

New York's six-game road win streak is one shy of a franchise record ... The Rangers have prevailed in each of their last four visits to Nashville and improved to 6-1-1 all-time in the Music City ... New York has now registered a point in 100 straight regular-season games when leading after two periods, compiling a 94-0-6 record over that stretch ... Nashville's line of David Legwand, Gabriel Bourque and Viktor Stalberg were on the ice for both Ranger goals.
