Predators sneak past Canucks

Vancouver, BC (SportsNetwork.com) - Nick Spaling assisted on Craig Smith's tying goal in the third period before scoring the go-ahead goal, sending the Nashville Predators to a 2-1 win over the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Arena.

Carter Hutton made 33 saves for the Predators, who have won four of their last five games.

Roberto Luongo stopped 24 shots for a Vancouver team that played its second straight game without both head coach John Tortorella (suspended) and captain Henrik Sedin (ribs/finger).

The Canucks had a two-game winning streak snapped and lost for the ninth time in 12 games.

"We have to protect leads. This is a tough one to lose," Luongo said.

Smith hammered home Spaling's behind-the-net pass, drawing the Predators even at 3:28 of the third.

Nashville then grabbed the lead at the tail end of a power play, as Spaling parked himself in front of the Vancouver goalie and deflected rookie Seth Jones' point shot at 12:38.

"We fell behind early, but it was a good job of staying with it and we managed to come back," Spaling said.

Vancouver was 0-for-5 on the power play, including a man advantage with under five minutes to go.

The Canucks, who had six minutes of power-play time in a scoreless first period, got on the board in the middle frame. Chris Higgins managed to get a piece of Dale Weise's left point shot, redirecting it past Hutton at 9:09.

Game Notes

The Predators opened a four-game road trip through Canada, while the Canucks began a four-game homestand ... Nashville snapped a four-game losing streak to Vancouver.
