NHL Game Summary - Calgary at Philadelphia

(Saturday, February 8th)

Final Score: Philadelphia 2, Calgary 1

Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Ray Emery stopped 32-of-33 shots and Scott Hartnell picked up the deciding score in the third period, as Philadelphia edged Calgary, 2-1, on Saturday.

"Yeah he's done that a lot. He's a winner," said Flyers head coach Craig Berube of his backup goaltender coming in when cold. "I knew he would go in there and play well. He stayed sharp in practice and played a real good game."

Brayden Schenn also lit the lamp for the Flyers, who enter the Olympic break having won four in a row and five of their last six.

Matt Stajan picked up a late tally and Reto Berra made 21 saves for the Flames, who lost for just the second time in their last eight.

"Reto came up, so I felt like it was a good road game on our part," said Calgary head coach Bob Hartley. "There were obviously mistakes on our two goals, but it's a game of mistakes. We're playing lots of young players and we're ready to invest in those young guys. But overall, once again, I can't fault the effort."

Claude Giroux snapped a long shot which was tipped in front by Hartnell past Berra from the right wing at 4:04 of the third period, and Philly gave Emery an insurance tally and a 2-0 edge.

The Philly captain hit the break with points in four straight and six of his last seven, but refuses to be bitter about being left off Team Canada.

"I try not to concentrate on that," he said. "Just enjoy the break a little bit. Mentally, kind of relax and just make sure I'm ready for the second half. It's going to be a tight race to the playoffs so it's important for us to go until the end of the season."

That lead appeared to be in jeopardy when Calgary's Lee Stempniak was left alone right in front of Emery with 4:15 remaining, but the veteran netminder dove out of his crease with a poke check to prevent a shot on goal.

Stajan, however, didn't hesitate, and ripped a shot home from the left side off a T.J. Galiardi rebound with 2:26 on the clock to pull the Flames within one.

Berra reached the bench for an extra attacker inside the final minute, but the visitors couldn't get close to Emery for an equalizer.

The hosts had the better scoring chances in a scoreless opening period, but Berra came up with 11 saves and Emery was true on eight opportunities.

Schenn snapped a six-game goal drought and gave the Flyers a lead on a one- timer from the bottom of the left circle with 8:04 played in the second. It was a necessary goal, as Calgary accumulated an 11-4 shot edge in the period and carried the majority of the play.
