NHL Game Summary - Phoenix at New Jersey

(Thursday, March 27th)

Final Score: Phoenix 3, New Jersey 2 (SO)

Newark, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - Mikkel Boedker scored the lone goal in the shootout, as the Phoenix Coyotes clipped the New Jersey Devils, 3-2, on Thursday at Prudential Center.

After New Jersey's Damien Brunner came up empty to start the shootout, Boedker followed with a nifty backhander over Martin Brodeur before Thomas Greiss turned away the final two Devils to send Phoenix to its second straight win.

Kyle Chipchura and Chris Summers supplied a goal and an assist apiece, while Greiss finished with 26 saves for the Coyotes, who remained locked in the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference.

"We score by committee," Phoenix head coach Dave Tippett said, referring to the fact that Chipchura and Summers had combined for just four goals this season coming into the game. "That's who we are. As long as it keeps coming it doesn't matter who scores."

Adam Henrique and Ryane Clowe each lit the lamp for the Devils, who have lost an NHL-record 13 consecutive shootouts dating back to last season. Brodeur registered 25 saves in the setback.

"No way around it. (Shootout losses) are part of the reason the playoffs are getting tougher (to make)," Brodeur said. "It would've been better with two points but we have to be happy with what we did."

Despite the loss, New Jersey moved within four points of an Eastern Conference wild-card spot. Columbus, Detroit, Washington and Toronto all sit tied for the two spots with 80 points.

Summers' marker with 3:03 left in the second staked Phoenix to a 2-0 lead, but the Devils broke through in the final second of the frame to head into the third trailing by just one.

With time winding down in the second, Jon Merrill carried the puck below the goal line on the left side before throwing it toward the crease. Clowe, who was knocked down in front, had the puck deflect off his body and in with 0.3 ticks left on the clock to bring New Jersey within 2-1.

Henrique potted the equalizer 10:32 into the third, as he dug the puck free behind the Phoenix net before stuffing it past Greiss' left pad to tie the tilt at 2-2.

New Jersey outshot Phoenix 3-2 in overtime, but the Devils were unable to get anything past Greiss to send the game to a shootout.

Early on, Chipchura gave the Coyotes a 1-0 lead just 2:21 into the contest when he threw a shot on net from just below the right circle that snuck under the right pad of Brodeur.

Summers' heavy slapper from the high slot snuck through the five-hole of a screened Brodeur at 16:57 of the second to make it 2-0 Phoenix.

Game Notes

Summers registered his second NHL goal ... Coyotes forward David Moss suffered a lower-body injury and did not return ... Brodeur was credited with his 45th career assist on Henrique's goal ... New Jersey has scored just once (Reid Boucher on Dec. 4 vs. Montreal) in 28 shootout attempts this season ... The Devils went 0-for-4 on the power play.
