Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Derick Brassard scored on a breakaway with 12.9 seconds in overtime to lift the New York Rangers to a 3-2 come-from- behind victory over the Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena.

Benoit Pouliot assisted on Brassard's game-winner and added a power-play goal earlier on to help the Rangers wrap up a grueling season-opening nine-game road trip at 3-6-0. Mats Zuccarello also tallied for New York, while rookie goaltender Cameron Talbot notched his first career NHL win with a strong showing between the pipes.

Starting for a second straight outing with Henrik Lundqvist sidelined with an undisclosed injury, Talbot stopped 32-of-34 shots.

Jimmy Howard made 37 saves for the slumping Red Wings, now 0-2-2 over their last four contests, with Drew Miller and Daniel Alfredsson netting goals in the loss.

"We have no consistency in our play," Detroit head coach Mike Babcock remarked. "It doesn't look like we're wearing the team out. We've got a long way to go in that area and we'll have to sort this out."

The Rangers trailed 2-1 after two periods before drawing even early in the third. Marc Staal blasted a shot from near the left boards that Howard kicked away, but Zuccarello skated in to put home the rebound while falling to the ice 2:18 into the final frame.

Both netminders kept it deadlocked by coming up with several key saves, and the matchup appeared headed to a shootout until a diving Pouliot chipped the puck to Brassard, who got past the Detroit defense in the neutral zone and fired an attempt past Howard with time winding down.

"I don't know how much time I had and the puck was bouncing a little bit, so I just tried to shoot as hard as I could," said Brassard. "I think it kind of tricked Howard on that play."

Talbot made 15 saves during a busy opening period, but couldn't prevent the Red Wings from converting a 2-on-1 that followed a giveaway by Zuccarello late in the session. Miller beat the rookie with a wrister to the stick side to give Detroit a 1-0 edge.

Howard protected the one-goal lead through the majority of the second period, before the Rangers finally ended the scoring drought while on a power play.

A long drive by Brian Boyle was turned away by Howard, but Pouliot was able to collect the loose puck in front of the net and find an opening with a backhander 2:40 prior to the second intermission.

New York's Taylor Pyatt was sent off for interference just 72 seconds after Pouliot's goal, however, and the Red Wings capitalized on the resulting man advantage when Alfredsson one-timed a Pavel Datsyuk feed while stationed in the slot with only 11 seconds remaining in the period.

Game Notes

The Rangers recorded their first win in Detroit since Jan. 30, 1999, having lost in their six most recent visits to Joe Louis Arena ... Detroit fell for only the second time in seven games this season when scoring the first goal, while New York had been 0-5-0 when the opponent scores first ... The Red Wings dropped to 1-2-0 in overtime contests ... The Rangers will hold their home opener at the renovated Madison Square Garden Monday against Montreal.
