NHL Game Summary - Philadelphia at New Jersey

(Saturday, November 2nd)

Final Score: Philadelphia 1, New Jersey 0

Newark, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - Ray Emery stopped all 14 shots he faced and Philadelphia nipped New Jersey, 1-0, at Prudential Center.

Brayden Schenn recorded the lone goal for the Flyers, who allowed a season-low in shots and improved to 4-9-0 this season.

Emery stepped in for his third start of the season, and in picking up his first win of the year, helped Philly erase the memory of a franchise-worst 7-0 home loss to the Capitals on Friday -- one in which Emery accumulated 29 penalty minutes for pummeling opposing goaltender Braden Holtby in a third- period brawl.

It was all business on Saturday, however, as the 31-year-old netminder recorded his 15th career whitewash.

"We got the [crap] kicked out of us the last game," Flyers forward Jakub Voracek said. "Everyone has to dig in and put pressure on and try to do something and be ready to play."

Martin Brodeur made 20 saves in defeat for the Devils, who had won two games in a row.

Emery was the recipient of some late-game luck to keep his shutout intact.

Michael Ryder was turned away by Emery just prior to the midway point of the third period during a Devils power play, keeping it a one-goal game for the visitors.

Adam Henrique then missed wide right on an open chance in close with seven minutes left in the contest, and Ryder caught iron from the left circle on the advantage with just over 4 1/2 minutes to play.

Brodeur was sent to the bench with 1:10 on the clock, but a comeback was derailed when Dainius Zubrus was sent off for hooking Scott Hartnell to disrupt his chance at the empty net with 32 seconds remaining.

"The Flyers played really well, but we have to find ways to break them a little bit more," the venerable veteran netminder said. "We had two power plays in the last 10 minutes of the game. Did we get a shot? I'm not sure. That's not good enough."

The Flyers hit the scoreboard with 5:31 remaining in the opening period, when a right-circle try from Andrej Meszaros appeared to be redirected by Schenn in a goalmouth scramble.

Jaromir Jagr came within inches of tying the game as the clock ticked down to two minutes remaining in the second. Though he caught Emery unaware at the right post, his backhand of a rolling puck slide along the goal line and exited on the opposite side of the crease.

Game Notes

Before Emery did so, Roman Cechmanek was the only Flyers netminder to win a 1-0 road contest against the Devils, a 22-save decision on Feb. 27, 2002 ... Emery posted his fourth shutout with Philadelphia and first since Feb. 1, 2010, a 3-0 win in Calgary, which was also his last win in a Flyers uniform ... Flyers forward Matt Read took three minors in the first period alone, after accumulating 14 penalty minutes in his career until Saturday ... The Devils scratched forwards Patrik Elias (upper-body), Travis Zajac, and defenseman Peter Harrold, while the Flyers played without forwards Steve Downie (concussion) and Vinny Lecavalier (face) ... Hal Gill made his Philadelphia debut after being a healthy scratch for the season's first 12 games ... Zubrus skated in his 1,100th career contest.
