NHL Game Summary - NY Islanders at Los Angeles

(Saturday, December 7th)

Final Score: Los Angeles 3, NY Islanders 0

Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Martin Jones made his second NHL start and stopped 16 shots to notch his first career shutout, as the Los Angeles Kings blanked the New York Islanders, 3-0, on Saturday at Staples Center.

Anze Kopitar, Dustin Brown and Tyler Toffoli each tallied once for the Kings, who have won three straight games.

Kevin Poulin permitted two goals on 23 shots for the skidding Islanders, who have dropped nine straight games, the club's longest losing streak since a 14- game slide (0-11-3) from Oct. 23-Nov. 24, 2010.

"If we're not going to score any goals, it's going to be tough for us," Islanders head coach Jack Capuano said.

Kopitar broke the scoreless deadlock 12:08 into the middle frame when he received a stretch pass from Alec Martinez down the right side before cutting into the slot and rifling a wrister over the glove of Poulin for a 1-0 lead.

The Kings doubled their edge just past the midpoint of the third, as Jarret Stoll got to the puck behind the New York net and made a nifty pass between his legs to Brown, who stuffed in a wraparound at 10:37 to make it 2-0.

Jones needed to make just five saves in the third to finish off the whitewash, while Toffoli tacked on an empty-netter at 18:56 to account for the final margin.

Both goaltenders played well in a scoreless opening frame, with Poulin posting six saves and Jones stopping seven shots.

"It's good. I mean anytime you win it's a good feeling," Jones said. "It wasn't a ton of work early, but they had some zone time so I was able to get in the game. I thought we got better as the game went on."

Game Notes

The Kings are 10-1-4 in their last 15 games ... Jones has stopped 42-of-44 shots in his first two NHL starts ... LA has allowed two goals or less in a team-record 15 straight games ... New York went 0-for-4 on the power play, while LA failed on all five its power-play chances.
