NHL Game Summary - Philadelphia at Ottawa

(Monday, December 9th)

Final Score: Ottawa 5, Philadelphia 4 (SO)

Ottawa, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Jason Spezza scored in the third round of the shootout as the Ottawa Senators took a 5-4 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday.

Spezza was the final shooter for Ottawa and he slowed down in front of the net before deking to the forehand and stuffing the puck in. Sean Couturier then rung his wrister off the right post to end the game.

"We talked about getting more consistent in our play," said Spezza. "We all knew that if we can be on the same page, we'll have better results and it's starting to show."

Clarke MacArthur scored twice and Kyle Turris and Patrick Wiercioch each posted a goal for the Senators, who came into the game having lost four of five. Craig Anderson gave up four goals on 29 shots, and stopped all three shooters in the shootout.

Kimmo Timonen, Luke Schenn and Michael Raffl each posted a goal and an assist for the Flyers, who have dropped three of their last four. Steven Mason gave up four goals on 34 shots in the loss.

"We're playing teams that are very good defensively," said Flyers captain Claude Giroux. "They were all over us whenever we got the puck, and we need to find a way to create some space to skate."

The Flyers took the initial lead as Wayne Simmonds skated the puck from the left point down the wing and moved to the front. He got a shot off on net that Anderson stopped, but Raffl was there to clean up the garbage for his first NHL goal at 8:18 of the first.

Just over two minutes later, the Senators tied the game as a turnover in the Ottawa end saw Jason Spezza pick up the pick and send a lead pass. The puck hit a Flyer, but it bounced into the Philly end where MacArthur picked it up in the slot and his quick shot beat Mason for his 10th of the season.

Ottawa took a 2-1 lead on the power play at 9:30 of the second period as Bobby Ryan sent a backdoor pass from the low left side over to the right where Wiercioch snapped it in.

Philly, though, scored two minutes later as Jakub Voracek sent a shot on net from the right wing that was blocked by a defender, but it went right back to Voracek and his second shot went home.

Schenn scored at 13:33 of the second as he threw a shot on net from the top of the right circle that hit off a Sen and went in.

The Sens tied the game at 2:21 of the third as MacArthur scored his second of the game on a rebound of a Ryan shot, and took a 4-3 lead exactly six minutes later as Turris' shot from the right deflected off a Flyer.

Philly, though, tied the game as Timonen's shot from the left point snuck through a crowd at 10:58.

Game Notes
