NHL Game Summary - Chicago at St. Louis

(Saturday, December 28th)

Final Score: St. Louis 6, Chicago 5 (SO)

St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Kevin Shattenkirk's goal in the fifth round of the shootout completed St. Louis' comeback from a late two-goal deficit and sent the hosts to a 6-5 decision over Chicago at Scottrade Center.

All four skaters scored in the first two rounds, and after some solid saves at each end, Shattenkirk beat Antti Raanta with a low shot inside the left post. Brandon Saad was then turned away by Brian Elliott to end the contest.

Vladimir Tarasenko and Patrik Berglund scored late in the third period to force overtime for the Blues, who played without leading scorer Alex Steen, placed on injured reserve prior to the contest with a concussion.

Maxim Lapierre, Jaden Schwartz and Dmitrij Jaskin also lit the lamp to help Elliott claim the victory in relief of Jaroslav Halak. Halak was yanked after allowing three goals on 13 shots in the first period. Elliott ended up with 17 saves in regulation.

"They couldn't handle us in their zone and we couldn't handle them in our zone," said Blues coach Ken Hitchcock. "I was happy we stayed with it. It wasn't pretty for either team but we found a way to get two points, which is a heck of a bonus for us."

Patrick Kane picked up a goal and two assists for the Blackhawks, while Raanta made just 20 stops. Patrick Sharp, Andrew Shaw, Saad and Brent Seabrook all lit the lamp in defeat.

Chicago has lost all three games to its Central Division rivals this season.

"Great hockey game. Great intensity. It was good for the sport, tough for us," said Blackhawks head coach Joel Quenneville.

Sharp continued his hot streak, opening the scoring just shy of the eight- minute mark of the first with his fourth goal in two games. Shaw doubled the edge on a Chicago power play just prior to the midway point, tipping a Duncan Keith shot which settled on the goal line into the net at the right post.

Lapierre halved the hosts' deficit with 4:56 left, but Kane responded for the visitors exactly three minutes later.

St. Louis evened the score before the eight-minute mark of the second, with Schwartz striking at 2:46 on a shot from between the circles and Jaskin picking up his first career goal at 7:47 by tapping in a Jay Bouwmeester rebound.

Saad restored Chicago's advantage inside of three minutes left and it was a 4-3 game after 40 minutes.

Seabrook's long wrister from the blue line gave the Blackhawks a 5-3 margin after only 66 seconds elapsed in the third period and the defending champs nursed that lead until the final minutes.

Tarasenko and Berglund beat Raanta twice in a span of 1:17 to draw the hosts even. The former made it a one-goal contest at 16:09 by taking an Alex Pietrangelo miss and converting from the high slot, then the latter sent the game to overtime on a power-play backhander at 17:26.

Game Notes

The Blues have recorded four straight wins over the Blackhawks for the first time since Mar. 3, 1998-Jan. 7, 1999 ... St. Louis upped its shootout record this season to 4-2, while Chicago slipped to 4-5.
