Ducks trim Kings' lead with Game 3 win

Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Ben Lovejoy's late third-period goal proved to be the difference as the Anaheim Ducks beat the Los Angeles Kings 3-2 on Thursday night at Staples Center.

Corey Perry and Teemu Selanne each scored power-play goals as the Ducks trimmed the Kings' lead in this Western Conference semifinal series to 2-1.

Jonas Hiller made seven saves in the final 9:58 after rookie Frederik Andersen left with a lower-body injury for the Ducks. Andersen, who is considered day- to-day, started all six games in the Ducks' first-round win over the Dallas Stars before Hiller started the first two games against the Kings in Anaheim.

"He was playing well and he's a guy that you can tell if he's playing well early, the glove hand seems a lot sharper and he's a lot more concerned and he's good with it. So I thought he played good," Anaheim head coach Bruce Boudreau said about Andersen, who stopped 22 shots.

Jeff Carter and Mike Richards scored for Los Angeles, while Jonathan Quick stopped 19 shots in defeat.

"The Ducks played harder than us tonight, they executed better," Richards said. "They were a desperate team and they showed up. We know what it's like to be in that position, and if the other team is more desperate than we are, they are probably going to have more success."

The Kings host Game 4 on Saturday.

Lovejoy beat Quick high on the glove side with 2:55 remaining to give Anaheim a 3-1 lead. Perry had a chance to seal the win, but his stick broke at the most inopportune time, causing him to miss an empty net.

The Kings then came down the other end and Richards batted a rebound out of the air with 30.8 seconds remaining.

Unlike in Game 1, Los Angeles wasn't able to force overtime.

The Kings had won six straight after falling behind 3-0 to San Jose in the opening round.

Home ice has been anything but advantageous in this series.

"So far that hasn't meant anything, I hope it continues for at least one more game," said Boudreau.

Anaheim opened the scoring on an early power play. Perry finished a pretty passing sequence, scoring from the slot 4:06 into the game.

Los Angeles copied Anaheim on a second-period power play to draw even. Just like the Ducks, the Kings moved the puck from high to low before setting up for a one-timer in the slot. Marian Gaborik sent a pass from the icing line to Carter, who beat Andersen at 4:59.

Selanne broke the tie later in the middle stanza. The veteran forward skated down the right wing on a 2-on-1 and tapped in Nick Bonino's feed from the left circle with 4:50 remaining.

Game Notes

Kings forward Anze Kopitar picked up an assist on Carter's goal and now has points in all 10 games this postseason, totaling four goals and 11 assists ... The last King to have points in 10 straight games in one postseason was Wayne Gretzky, who had a franchise-record 12-game point streak in 1993 ... Anaheim forward Kyle Palmieri returned to the lineup after being a healthy scratch the past four games.
