NHL Game Summary - Winnipeg at Nashville

(Thursday, October 24th)

Final Score: Nashville 3, Winnipeg 2 (OT)

Nashville, TN (SportsNetwork.com) - Craig Smith scored with 17 seconds left in overtime, and the Nashville Predators continued their success against the Winnipeg Jets with a 3-2 win at Bridgestone Arena.

Jets defenseman Dustin Byfuglien looked to start a rush from the Winnipeg zone late in the extra session, but lost control of the puck. The Predators quickly capitalized on the turnover as David Legwand fed Smith for a one-timer from the left circle.

Shea Weber and Patric Hornqvist also scored for Nashville, which has won five of its last seven games and improved to 8-1-2 in its last 11 games against the team formerly known as the Atlanta Thrashers.

The Predators learned earlier Thursday that starting goaltender Pekka Rinne will miss about four weeks to have arthroscopic surgery on an infected left hip.

With one of the league's top netminders sidelined for the foreseeable future, Carter Hutton gets the opportunity to prove he is a capable NHL goalie. Hutton, making his third career start and second this season, registered 34 saves. The 27-year-old picked up his first NHL win Sunday at Winnipeg.

"I thought he was pretty square to the puck," Nashville head coach Barry Trotz said about Hutton. "They put a lot of rubber towards him and he handled it just fine."

Ondrej Pavelec stopped 30 shots for the Jets, who have dropped three in a row.

Winnipeg's Blake Wheeler pounced on a rebound to tie the game with 3:10 to play in regulation. Fourteen seconds later, Nashville forward Mike Fisher went off for slashing. Fisher had missed three straight games with a lower-body injury.

The Predators made it a perfect 4-for-4 killing penalties, and the game was decided in overtime.

Nashville opened the scoring on the power play. After a shorthanded bid by Winnipeg was foiled, Weber lit the lamp on the counter rush, collecting a Legwand pass just as he crossed the blue line and beating Pavelec on the blocker side from the high slot with 4:07 remaining in the first period.

The Jets pulled even at the 13:49 mark of the second period on Anthony Peluso's maiden NHL tally, a successful wraparound that was initially waved off by the official. Video review, however, showed the puck crossing the goal line.

Hornqvist potted a rebound to put Nashville up 2-1 at 6:04 of the third period.

Game Notes

The Predators have not allowed a power-play goal in seven consecutive games ... Magnus Hellberg was recalled from AHL Milwaukee to back up Hutton.
