No. 5 NC State tops No. 9 FSU, 3-1

Posted May 11, 2013

— No. 5 NC State won its sixth straight game and 21st of its last 22 with a 3-1 Senior Day victory over No. 9 Florida State at Doak Field at Dail Park on Saturday.

The Wolfpack (39-11, 16-8 ACC) took over the top spot in the ACC’s Atlantic Division standings by knocking off Florida State (40-10, 16-9). The Pack took a 1-0 lead in the third and added a pair of runs in the fourth to make it 3-0. The Seminoles chopped the lead to 3-1 in the eighth, but wouldn’t cross the plate again in the contest.

Wolfpack starter Carlos Rodon (7-2) passed Cory Mazzoni on the NC State career strikeouts leaderboard with the 257th punchout of his career. Rodon claimed the win on eight innings of work, scattering nine hits and four walks to hold the Seminoles to one earned. The sophomore fanned eight batters, marking the 12th time in 13 starts this season that he has whiffed eight or more.

Senior Bryan Adametz provided the two-RBI, two-out single in the bottom of the fourth to push State to the victory. It was Adametz’s only hit of the afternoon, but he also turned in a great performance in the field by snagging a foul ball while crashing into the left field bullpen wall and gunning down a runner at the plate to end the FSU third and preserve a 0-0 tie.

Adametz’s throw represented the seventh time this season that Wolfpack outfielders have gunned down a runner at the plate and was his second of the year. Senior Brett Williams is responsible for four of those and he added a crucial outfield assist to nab a runner at third in the FSU fifth. Williams finished the day 1-for-3 at the plate.

Grant Clyde submitted the Pack’s only multi-hit effort, going 2-for-4. Jake Armstrong hit his seventh double of the year and scored a run. Logan Ratledge also scored in a 1-for-3 game with a stolen base. Ratledge is hitting .545 with four runs and two RBIs in his last three contests. Jake Fincher went 1-for-4 to improve to 48-for-50 on reaching base at least once in games this season.

Chris Overman claimed his sixth save of the year in a 1-2-3 ninth inning with one strikeout. Overman extends his streak to 22 innings since giving up his last earned run, dating back to last season. Since April 25, 2012, Overman’s ERA is 0.64.

Florida State starter Luke Weaver (5-2) took the loss on three earned on eight hits and one walk over seven innings, striking out nine. Reliever Gage Smith pitched the Wolfpack eighth, walking one.

The Pack hit paydirt in the third behind Ratledge’s leadoff single down the right field line. Ratledge stole second with one out and advanced to third on a wild pitch during the next at-bat. A wild third strike allowed Fincher to reach and Ratledge to score to make it 1-0.

In the fourth, senior Tarran Senay led off with a single through the right side. Armstrong chopped a two-out double over the leaping third baseman to put two in scoring position. Adametz came through with a single up the middle to drive in both and provide the game-winning runs.

Florida State’s lone run came in the eighth on a two-out rally. Marcus Davis singled to short to get it started. John Nogoswki doubled to right center to score pinch-runner J.J. Gould from first.

NC State returns to action on Sunday at 3 p.m. on ESPN3 for game two of the series. Radio coverage will be provided by 88.1 WKNC.

It's one thing to hit 101 (I don't know of any pitchers who can do that with any consistency & only a select few who can hit 100 on the gun) & quite another to pitch at that speed. I watched a little & saw him hit 95 while I was watching. Glad to see good baseball being played in NC.

Wow - 101??!! Impressive. Have to admit State is peaking at the right time, and they'll most likely be hosting a super regional along with Carolina. The ACC is a baseball conference - who woudda thunk it.

He hit 101 on the gun yesterday according to a news report....if he can ever figure out how to control that, they won't be able to touch him.
