Congrats to the Virginia Cavaliers who wrapped up the ACC regular season title by beating Syracuse on Saturday. It was the Cavaliers' fourth win over a team in the RPI top 50. They are an even 4-4 against the top 50 which is the 4th best percentage in the league.

Syracuse has more RPI top 50 wins than any team in the ACC. The Orange are 7-2. North Carolina has the second best record against the top 50 going 5-3. Duke is next in line with a 5-4 record.

Outside of those four, every other ACC team has a sub-par record against the top 50, and it's a pretty hard fall. Three teams are winless, and six schools have just one win. Here's a look at the 11 other ACC schools and their record against the RPI top 50.

Florida State 3-7

Miami 2-6

NC State 2-8 (Including win at Pitt)

Clemson 1-5

Pittsburgh 1-6

Wake Forest 1-8

Notre Dame 1-8

Boston College 1-9

Georgia Tech 0-6

Virginia Tech 0-8

Maryland 0-9

Looking like a 4-5 bid league. Way to underachieve rest of the league!

Toddler, No excuses for Carolina blowing a 14-point lead. Can't do that and expect to go far in the NCAAT.

I remember when the ACC was the best basketball conference, and with the addition of Cuse and L'Ville, I agree the ACC should once again be the top dog.

  • Toddler10-21 Mar 4, 2014

Cuse has won a lot of close games, but they are 7-2 against the RPI. UNC won a close one lastnight, but, fans are sasaying they were looking forward to Duke. Like it or not Cuse has made the conference better and Ville will make it the best in the country. Isn't that what ACC fans want?

Given that all of those tames have 4-6 losses against top 10 teams in their own conference makes the data a little skewed. See what the record is against the top 70 RPI teams excluding conference games. A more telling tail....

I can believe Syracuse is at the top of the conference for this, Duke also. I've seen some say Syracuse is over-rated or that they should have lost more games and were getting lucky. What many never mention is this team has been playing without Jarami Grant of late (pictured) who has been battling a bad back. They haven't made excuses despite this. They also won the Maui Invitational earlier this year. All those close games will probably benefit them ....... they tailed off last year (like this year) but then went on to make a deep run and made the final 4 last year. They've helped the ACC, like it or not.

Good point. If the ACC is going to add teams to the conference, may as well make them quality teams.

    Pathetic.

The Big East is making the ACC better.

i'd say more top-heavy than weak. we do have 3 teams ranked in the top ten right now. no other conference has more than 1.

I don't mind cuse and louisvile coming in. It will be tougher to win the conference but at least cuse failed in their 1st attempt and traditional ACC team wins. Guess the ACC is tougher than cuse thought.
