Pack O will improve, but so does competition

Posted October 26, 2013

Dave Doeren's got to welcome the return of Brandon Mitchell under center Saturday when the Wolfpack goes to Florida State (3:30 p.m. ABC, Mix 101.5)

He gives them the option of the explosive play as opposed to Pete Thomas, who is just a first-down type QB. Getting Mitchell back gives the offensive coordinator a new toy to play with.

Logan Logan: Mitchell's return could open up NC State's playbook

But the Pack faces a freshman quarterback in Jameis Winston who is playing as well as any first-year player ever has.

Players are adapting more quickly to the college playbook (and from college to the NFL) because year-round programs and advanced coaching methods make the transition easier. They don't have to learn a whole new playbook. They see something and think, "Hey, we ran that in high school. One, two, hike, let's go play."

Winston, at this stage in his college career, is already a frighteningly talented pro prospect. He has that one thing that NFL scouts look for that isn't teachable โ€“ accuracy. I have seen him put the ball in some pretty small spaces.
