— The NC State softball team remained unbeaten in contests played at Dail Stadium this season by sweeping a doubleheader against Georgia Tech, 5-4 and 10-3. The Wolfpack’s 13 consecutive home games won is the longest home winning streak in school history.

“I’m really glad we bounced back like that today,” said head coach Shawn Rychcik. “We had some good resiliency in the games today in coming back from being down in both games. It’s really good to get two wins and I’m happy with our performance today.”

Game One – NCST 5, GT 4
The Wolfpack (17-9, 8-3 ACC) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first game against the Yellow Jackets (18-8, 7-6 ACC) after Davis led off the inning with a walk and scored later in the inning on a throwing error by the shortstop. Georgia Tech countered in the top of the second with a run following an RBI-single by Maddie Lionberger.

Junior Sara Lippard scored the second run of the game for the Pack in the second inning after an error by the Tech second baseman. After the Yellow Jackets tied the score at two in the top of the fifth, the Wolfpack responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning.

Kirsty Grant, a senior from Oakville, Ontario, Canada, opened the frame with a double down the left field line and Renada Davis followed with a blast over the left field fence for a two-run homer. It was her sixth of the season and gave State a 4-2 lead.

Georgia Tech would not be outdone as Katie Johnsky homered to lead off the top of the sixth for her team. The Ramblin Wreck tacked on another run in the inning after an RBI-single by Hayley Downs to knot the score at four.

Lippard broke the 4-4 tie in the bottom of the sixth with a fielder’s choice to the shortstop which scored senior Chelsea Tate from third base and give the Pack a 5-4 lead. Junior Emily Weiman threw a complete for the Pack and had four strikeouts while allowing three earned runs.

Senior Leah Jones led the squad at the plate with two hits, while Davis, Grant and Lippard each had one hit.

Game Two – NCST 10, GT 3
NC State used a five-run fifth inning to break open the second game of the doubleheader against Georgia Tech and win it, 10-3. Both teams collected 12 hits in the contest, but the Wolfpack was able to get some timely hits when it needed them the most.

Tech scored two unearned runs in the top of the first to take a 2-0, but the Pack matched that total with two runs of its own in the bottom of the second. Jones hit an RBI-double in the inning and Grant collected an RBI-single.

The Yellow Jackets regained the lead in the top of the fourth, 3-2, however, it was short-lived as NC State scored three runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 5-3 lead.

The Wolfpack broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth with five runs in the inning to extend its lead to 10-3. Freshman Hannah Yeager started the action with her first collegiate home run, a solo shot over the left field fence. Classmate Molly Hutchison had a two RBI-double in the frame and Jones smacked a two run single to plate the other runs in the inning.

Weiman started the second game and pitched the first five innings, before she was relieved by Courtney Mirabella. The freshman threw the final two innings and struck out five hitters in six outs recorded.

NC State will return to action on Saturday, March 22 when it hosts Virginia Tech in a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for noon with the second game to follow.
