Charlotte, N.C. — The Carolina Panthers announced their team captains for the 2017 season Friday afternoon, which includes five returners and one newcomer.
Panthers safety Kurt Coleman was voted into the group by his teammates, the first time during this tenure in Carolina.
Coleman joins linebacker Thomas Davis, quarterback Cam Newton, center Ryan Kalil, linebacker Luke Kuechly and tight end Greg Olsen as the team’s six captains for the 2017 season.
Defensive end Charles Johnson is the only captain from last year’s squad who was not voted in this season. Johnson was awarded the honor in each of the last three seasons and for the 2012 season.
Davis is the longest-tenured captain on the team. The All-Pro linebacker, who has overcome three ACL surgeries during his time with the Panthers, garnered the honor for the seventh straight season.
