Panthers give Rivera extension through 2017

Posted January 28, 2014

Panthers head coach Ron Rivera congratulates players following the Panthers vs. Saints game at Bank of America Stadium Sunday, Sept. 16.

— The Carolina Panthers extended head coach Ron Rivera's contract Tuesday through the 2017 season.

Under Rivera, the Panthers have improved in each of the last three seasons, including a 12-4 mark and NFC South title in 2013.

“The improvement of our team has been reflected in the progress of the record over the last three seasons under Ron and we look forward to building upon that foundation,” said Panthers Owner and Founder Jerry Richardson.

Rivera was named the NFL 2013 Coach of the Year by the Professional Football Writers of America as well as several other organizations and is a candidate for the AP Coach of the Year.

“I have been very clear about how much I have enjoyed living in Charlotte and working for this organization,” said Rivera. “I very much appreciate the support and confidence Mr. Richardson and Dave Gettleman have shown in me and our staff. Any success we have enjoyed is the result of a team effort by players, coaches, scouts and the entire organization, and our ultimate goal remains winning the Super Bowl.”

At least he will get more money when they fire him in a year or two!

Rivera is a good coach, and the players believed in him, even after another slow start; no one in that locker room threw in the towel, they worked hard every game.

I was against Rivera because of the conservative play calling. That is what I dislike about Fox. Once he started being more agressive, I started cheering more for "Riverboat". Get some WR's and DB's as mentioned and the future should be bright for the Panthers.

Happy to see this. The Panthers need stability right now. He has proven that he can coach. Finding some new coaches has definitely helped. He gambled this year versus being ultra-consertative, and it paid off. This team needs receivers and DB's.

I would love to see this team have a strong start next season vs all under Rivera. Cam did his job this season, and he's going to keep improving. He's still maturing. Draft the best and spend some money.

I have mixed emotions about this. If he has tuned the corner an become a too tier coach, then we need to do what we have I to keep him from being recruited away. If he just happened to have a one hit wonder season then it'll cost us a whole lot more when we do have to get to of him. Major dilemma for an owner who wants his team to move to the next level. Based on the turn around this season (the only evidence I have to go on) I think they did the right thing. Time will tell.
