Panthers to play three in primetime in 2014

— The Carolina Panthers, coming off a 12-4 season in which they claimed the NFC South division championship and saw a trip to the postseason, are prime-time darlings in 2014. The Panthers have three prime-time games, two at home.

They'll host the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday night, Sept. 21, and the New Orleans Saints Thursday, Oct. 30. Carolina travels to Philadelphia Nov. 10 for a Monday night game. 

The Panthers start the season on the road, Sept. 7 at Tampa Bay at 4:25 p.m., and have their home opener in Week 2 against Detroit. The game against the Lions and the rest of the Panthers' slate are 1 o'clock starts, although the NFL will be able to flex game times to highlight the best matchups as the season develops.

Seahawks host Green Bay in NFL kickoff event

As Super Bowl champions, the Seattle Seahawks get to kick off the NFL's regular season by hosting the Green Bay Packers on Sept. 4.

It's the third straight season the Packers have traveled to face the defending Super Bowl champions.

"It's a tremendous opportunity for our football team," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. "We have experience playing in the kickoff opener three years ago, and we will draw on that. Obviously, being the visiting team this time presents new challenges. It will help sharpen our focus even more during training camp and the preseason."

That Thursday game is the first of four prime-time games on opening weekend. Also at night will be a Sunday matchup of AFC champion Denver and Peyton Manning hosting his former team, Indianapolis; and a Monday night doubleheader with the New York Giants at Detroit, followed by San Diego at Arizona.

The NFL will play three games in London: Dolphins-Raiders on Sept. 28; Lions-Falcons on Oct. 26; and Cowboys-Jaguars on Nov. 9. The Detroit-Atlanta game will kick off at 9:30 a.m. ET in an experiment to test the NFL's audience draw on a Sunday morning.

A Saturday doubleheader in Week 16 has San Diego at San Francisco and Philadelphia at Washington.

For the first time, games in Weeks 5 through 10 can be flexed from Sunday afternoon to night, with a limit of two. Beginning with Week 11, a Sunday game can be moved to prime time each week. Also, a select number of Sunday afternoon games are being "cross-flexed," moving between CBS and Fox to potentially draw more viewers.

The Thanksgiving tripleheader features three strong division rivalries: Chicago at Detroit, Philadelphia at Dallas and Seattle at San Francisco, a rematch of the memorable NFC title game last January.

Looking for the latest installment of Manning vs. Tom Brady? The Patriots host it on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 2.

And for those looking for the rematch of the Super Bowl, Seattle's 43-8 rout of Denver, it's on Sept. 21 at Seattle. Denver opens the season against three 2013 playoff teams: Indianapolis and Kansas City at home, then at the Seahawks.

    Ravens beat Peyton and Brady, and a darn good 49ers team. Well Peyton did score 8 points in the super bowl. Glad you think the panthers will have a easy time against the AFC.

    Was thinking the same thing. I'm expecting a pretty bad year this year, and having three prime time games is a real gamble.

    Going to be a tough year for Cam, losing all those receivers is going to make it tough to pick up and go forward.

    Actually having the steelers on the schedule is good for the Panthers. The AFC has been very weak in recent years. especially when you consider the best the AFC has had to offer up (Patriots and Broncos) have been nothing more than "fodder" for the NFC winner. Last years super bowl victory was evident of the AFC's weakness.

    Couldn't agree more. This happens every year where a team has a great season, makes the playoffs and expectations are greater the next year. As a result prime time games are scheduled and the team has a terrible year. Recall how other teams in years past, have been scheduled on Monday or Sunday night football late in the year ? ... we then see two 3-10 teams playing on a national stage ? It could happen when you consider the panthers let most of their recievers go.

    Cam Newton has an uphill battle with this group. I hope I am wrong.
