Hurney leaves us nothing but a steaming pile

Hurney leaves us nothing but a steaming pile

The offense struggles again and Riveria's answer is to fire the punting coach. Brilliant! The hapless Hurney is out the door, while we're stuck with the pieces. Hurney traded the 2010 1st round pick to Niners for a 2009 2nd & 4th which he used to draft DE Everette Brown (waived by Panters 2 yrs later, waived by SD) and RB Mike Goodson. Then Headache Hurney drafts Jimmy Clausen, any number of the 2nd Rd picks after Clausen have been productive starters. I would point out Jimmy Graham was picked in 3rd AFTER both Lafell and Armanti Edwards.

I would not have drafted Newton, it may work out, but it is an enormously high risk with his character and maturity which was well known at that time. If you have #1 overall you have to use it wisely, not roll the dice on a high talent / low character guy. The talent assessment has been subpar, and the strategic use of draft picks has been squandered. I understand the uncertainties of the draft, that's why Bellichek has been so good, he prefers quantity; stockpiling 5-6 picks in Rds 3-5, knowing that 2 of those are likely to work out.

Let's get someone with a little Moneyball approach who can work the draft more effectively. Just give us some grownups running the show!
