NBC Sports is now reporting they think Cowher is heading to Carolina. Earlier in the year Fox sports said it.

What's the deal with this? I don't think Fox is leaving, do ya'll?

Living on the westcoast, I got my first look at my team Monday night (not just high lights). And, my first impression was no rhythm as a team. The O-line wasn't as strong as past or maybe Dallas were just a little stronger. Panthers running game showed some sput of energy at times but not enough to keep dallas defence honest enough to opening an air attack. In my opinion, that's a major problem. We're gonna have to do more with our ground attack to open up our receivers.
I knew the first two games were gonna be tough and I thought the Dallas game could have gone either way. Dallas and Carolina seems to be a mirror image of each other (with injuries and momentum). It just happened to go Dallas way Monday. A win or 2 after this week layoff and they'll have a 8 game season. I hope!

I have to respectfully disagree with you on who is at fault, jgunn. The first one thrown to Mus was left way short and was thrown into "DOUBLE COVERAGE". I guess he expected Mus to come back out of a dead sprint and a ball the was poorly thrown. The second one to smith was also in "DOUBLE COVERAGE". He was supposed to cut inside but he was beaten and couldn't get there. One could argue that it was triple coverage. There was a CB inside, a safety over top, and a LB waiting in the middle. As a QB with the game on the line you can't just throw it where they are supposed to be every time without looking at the coverage. If Jake had waited 2 seconds (which he did have time) he could have had a touchdown on that play.

The bottom line is the team doesn't have a leader anymore. They don't believe in Jake anymore!!! Nor do they believe in or respect Fox!!! They are saying they believe and support them but their actions on the field say otherwise.

  • royhill1964 Sep 30, 2009

jgunn, you are correct! The Panthers biggest problem is their attitude as a team. To h3ll with a PANIC button, I wish I could push the EJECT button. They stink right now and I don't think they have what it takes to turn it around. At this point, it looks like they are going to stumble through the season and get paid a nice salary to stink up the joint. Certain players on that team have already QUIT.

  • StunGunn Sep 30, 2009
    Sports Legend

Well, the chances of The Panthers making the playoffs are slim to none, and slim just left town. Jake had a good first half, and those INTs in the second half weren't his fault; the receivers changed their routes. That said, no matter who is at fault, they still lost, badly. Panic button officially pushed. Hey, at least they won't lose this week (it's a bye).

Problem is, I don't think that Marty Hurney will pull the trigger in time to land Cowher before another team does. Marty has made some very bad decisions in my opinion. I think this team needs a major revamp from the top down.

  • TruthBKnown Banned Again02 Sep 29, 2009
    Sports Legend

Some of the interceptions are not Jake's fault. Moose and Smith both ran bad routes and/or didn't hold up their end of the bargain. All Jake can do is throw it where he's supposed to. They have to either go get the ball, or bat it down. I think they're frustrated, too, and made some bad plays.

And the O-line gives Jake about 2 seconds to throw sometimes. I've decided it's not just a Jake Delhomme problem. It's a TEAM problem. They'll be lucky to win three games playing like this. I almost hope they lose them all so they get the first draft pick. And maybe a new coach. I'm not feeling much love for John Fox any more. Maybe we can get "the chin" to go to Charlotte?

  • unc96 Sep 29, 2009

Hey, what's the problem? Carolina did not want a new quarterback. Vick who? They raised Jake's salary instead, assuring them of at best an also ran status. Heck, he probably has a bonus option if he is able to lead the league in turnovers. Go Panthers!

  • royhill1964 Sep 29, 2009
    Sports Legend

Jake is not the only one on that team who is having a tough time. There are a few others who are major contributors to the Panthers problems as well. I'm sure we could ID the others if we were allowed to watch the game film. What are the chances we would see bad routes, missed assignments, lack of effort, etc.? Jake has made some bad decisions but he is certainly not alone. The Panthers have BAD chemistry right now and it doesn't look like that is going to change. They have NO leadership on that team. As for Steve Smith, he is about as me me me me as they come and he's always open, just ask him.

This is going to be one very loooong season. The wheels are coming off - all four of them, and there doesn't seem to be anyone to get the Panthers back on track. The powers that be made huge mistakes in the off season. Putting the franchise tag on Peppers and extending Jake's contract are two of the biggest of the poor decisions. The abrupt exit of Jerry Richardson's sons makes me question what is going on behind the scenes. There was also the mass exodus of the defensive coaches last season. It is such a shame because the Panthers do have a lot of talent on that team. Jake and John will be gone by the end of the season; John may not even make it to the end of the season.

Not necessarily. It depends on how we play. Sometimes two very good teams play and one has to lose. If we play great, and find a way to lose, I will hate it. But I won't hit the panic button. However, if we LOOK like we did against SC, I may.

I'm not a fairweather fan. I'll still watch them every week. But they're horrible. It's not fairweather to call 'em as we see 'em. It's just being honest.

The Panthers showed no promise in the preseason whatsoever. And they're living up to that now.

The season isn't lost because they're 0-2. It's lost because they're just horrible, and they're 0-2 for THAT reason.

^ So explain last season. You never call it a season 2 games in, that's absurd. If they are 2-6 at the halfway point, they're probably done as far as the playoffs but it depends on the division as a whole and how the others are playing. They're 0-2, not 0-6. Before you start with injuries, trades, etc., other teams deal with that stuff as well and they adjust accordingly. The Panthers may have a bad year but you don't know that at this point, although 0-2 isn't the way to start a season.

Pushing the PANIC button after 2 games huh? Let's not forget they play 16 games in a season and that is plenty of time to sort things out. It's a little early for the PANIC button.

What good is it going to panic? It will only make things worse. We all know that Jake is average, and his decesions under pressure suck! I just wish that someone could explain that kind of money coming after the performance he had in the playoffs.

Good call. I couldn't remember exactly, but I have been there from the beginning. I am as committed to my team as you can get. I am just worried about investing so much into a guy that is not producing. Plus, the O-Line NEEDS TO STEP IT UP!
Once we get a few good series out of them the game will open up. Jake needs protection to be effective. He needs time, and for now he's all we have, so give him some protection.

I said they should have taken Vick, but D.J. Shockley is as mobile and has a strong and accurate arm. He is currently 2nd or 3rd on the QB chart for the Falcons. The Panthers just need a star.

This team has never put any stock in getting a solid back up or successor at qb. They waste money and picks on the likes of Brett Basenez(sp?) and the "gloved one" to name a few and pay Jake way to much guaranteed money. If they are gonna throw money at any player they should throw it at Smith and hope he will stick around.

  • mroljill Sep 14, 2009

Delhomme was downright putrid the last two games. I do not agree that the D is done because look what they had to work with. They had to try and stop the Eagles on a very short field too many times because of jake's screw ups. We gave up a punt return for a td, a fumble for a td and the eagles had a 9 yard drive for a td. Take away those 21 points and the game doesn't look so bad. Not the D's fault....was Jake's fault plain and simple.

    Bench Warmer

I posted earlier on another thread, but I think Richardson should can Fox, Delhomme, AND Marty Hurney. They've all contributed to the demise of Panther football. The slide started when Polian left and hasn't corrected itself yet. We have too many guys with talent for the Panthers to be this bad. Watch out, Steve Smith may be gone as I think he may be a restricted agent after next year. Good thing we wrapped up Williams, Stewart, and Beason for a few. We just got AJ Feeley, but that doesn't help AT ALL. We need a franchise QB. Let Jake and Peppers hit the road while you can get something for them and pick up a QB. Cutler was available!!! HELLO!!!! Kenny Walters is right. The Eagles stacked the line, dropped their 4 secondary backs, and rushed the HOUSE. Wouldn't you if you were the D-coordinator for the Eagles and had a lead? DUH!! The O-line was having to block 7-8 guys a snap. Can't do it brothers. Not enough of them. Point is, we need help at QB and NOW. Makes me sick we would have to give Delhomme $20 million guaranteed. DUMB! I wouldn't give a Bojangles iced tea for him.

That said, and I'm not picking on you "georgebrackettjr", but I've been a Panther fan since the beginning also, and the first game was the HOF game with Jacksonville in July of 1995. I went to the first home game in Clemson that year and we got SHELLACKED by the Rams 31-10. First game of the Collins era. Frank Reich sucked, they put Collins in, and he led us to two scoring drives. Should have kept Kerry. The next year, just our second in existence, we were in the NFC championship game with Green Bay. So you KNOW the Panthers losing now is putting a hurting on this old school fan. HELP!!!!!

What I'm disappointed in is that I make $15 and hour and work my butt off all week to get that? Then I drive 140 miles one way to the stadium with high hopes of a win and a professional effort by the Panthers. Then these guys who make millions playing a game, and more money for one game than I do in a year, lay down and die right in front of me. And they expect me to come back.......don't think so!

I hope they choke on their paychecks.....

I'm out about $225 and sick of DEL-HOMME! He's not their future and they know it. I want my money back......

Push the PANIC buttom now: this season is over!!! I mean, really. Does anyone see Carolina beating Atlanta and Dallas??? I hope the guys can pull it together, but if Jake has to run for his life on every single play and make very poor decisions afterwards, we could be looking at 2 teams going winless in back-to-back seasons. I pray not....

Well... I am not ready to push the panic button yet. I 'm on the westcoast so I didnt watch the game, only highlights. I do beleive in Coach Fox (as of right now) so I'll give them two more games before I'm ready to through JD under the bus. I know he's at the bottom of the league (the last 3 yrs.)when it comes to the QB position. But.. I hoping the people who thought he's worth $42,000,000.00 are smarter than me! • Brackettville Sep 14, 2009

I know much of the blame is to be shared with the O-Line. I just think there have been times where he should have tucked the ball and took a sack. Punting the ball and playing D is better than giving the other team a short field to work with. I know he is capable of coming out next week (provided he has some protection and a good day for our RB's) and shredding the defense. The problem is, when we rely on him to pass and don't give him plenty of time...you get what we say yesterday. It is very frustrating.
Oh well, enough belly-aching. Next game...

  • Brackettville Sep 14, 2009
    Sports Legend

That is exactly what I am afraid of. We do have a great running attack. But, that only works when the defense is honest and dosn't sell out every play and send 8 guys in the box. If you know a team is going to run, usually you can stop it. Unless the other team has Barry Sanders.

  • kennywalters Sep 14, 2009
    Sports Legend

It used to be that the Panthers could mask Delhomme's deficiencies as a QB via the running game and having a defense capable of limiting their opponents. The defense looked like a shell of what it once was. I imagine that teams will start stacking the line against Williams & Stewart and force the Panthers to try and win with Jake throwing.
