More minority coaches now then there were before the rule. Thinly vailed racism in some comments here.

Couple of reasons the "Rooney Rule is good for blacks. #1 reason) Sometimes a black coach may not be considered for the job but because of the rule he is given an interview. His interview may wow the team so much he gets the job. They may have had no idea how good the guy was until he impressed in the interview. Reason #2 is it gives the candidate practice interviewing. That matters. Whether you believe it or not it does. The candidate is able to get feedback from the potential team after the selection process is over and the candidate can be better prepared for his next opportunity. There are other reasons the rule is beneficial some more obvious than others. Truth is it has helped and will continue to benefit aspiring black coaches. If you agree or disagree with the premise they need or deserve this advantage is another discussion altogether but it is beneficial. If not, why would the black coaches tolorate this?

While I agree that African-American coaches deserve a chance, I think the point of this thread is that the Rooney Rule doesn't really give them that chance. It actually is rather insulting towards AA candidates in my opinion. Owners "interview" coaches that they know they're not going to hire to satisfy the rule. The NFL looks past the fact that the minority candidate had absolutely no chance of getting the job. Wow! That's deep!

Actually it's a joke! These owners think they own the teams, they really don't. The teams belongs to the fans. I am a diehard Cowboy fan! Jerry Jones passed over Ray Sherman for Jason Garrett, poor decision. This guy was the OC for the Vikings, Steelers, plus coached the greatest receiver of all time, Jerry Rice. Todd Bowles another asst coach, under Bill Parcel a former player to name a few, list go on and on. I feel African America coach deserves a chance. Pro sports is just like any other profession, pay your dues as a player, work you way up to a head coach, mgmt, ownership. Only to get passed over by someone else for selfish reasons. Oh well, mediocre at it's finest! Curious to see what Panthers next screw up is gonna be!

Breaking news: The Panthers have hired a nameless 12 year old kid who is a Madden expert to be the Panthers new head coach. His staff will consist of his Halo Online team. The staff will be paid with an unlimited supply of Mountain Dew, the complete library of Faces of Death on Blu-Ray, and free access to online porn. Why the decision? "Because it's cheap!", says Jerry Richardson.

These owners invest millions and millions sometimes billions of their own money to purchase and own a team.

They should be able to hire whomever they would like. White, black, green, yellow, brown.

They should not be told whom they can or cannot or have to interview.

With the NFL coaching carousel in full swing, we are once again treated to the embarrassing spectacle that is the Rooney Rule. Jerry Jones all but announces that the interim tag will be removed from Jason Garrett, but makes clear that he first must comply with the Rooney Rule by interviewing an African-American just for show.

Several teams are actively and publicly courting Jim Harbaugh. If they are successful, they will also have to conduct sham interviews with coaches they have no intention of hiring, just to be in compliance with a rule that clearly has no usefulness.

Why a self respecting black coach would let himself be used this way is beyond me. It's time this rule got deep-sixed, IMHO.
