Report: Panthers to keep Fox, Hurney for 2010

Posted December 28, 2009

Carolina Panthers coach John Fox and general manager Marty Hurney will return in 2010, The Charlotte Observer is reporting.

The Observer, quoting sources, said the contract for Fox will expire after the 2010 season.

The Panthers are having a disappointing season and are out of the playoffs this year, which has raised questions about the futures of Fox and Hurney. But Carolina has had two straight impressive victories, over Minnesota and the New York Giants, and quarterback Matt Moore has played well with Jake Delhomme injured and on the sidelines.

I have my suspicions that Jake may start next year, but in all honesty, I think the fan base will revolt totally if Matt doesn't get the nod.

Peppers frees up 16mil on the salary cap, unless the team screws the pooch again and puts the franchise tag on him again. I'd much rather see that go to the likes of steve smith or Mat Moore tbh. Right now it's about how much can the team absorb on the cap, and keeping Fox means they don't have to pay his salary + another coaches til Fox's contract ends.
A contract means you agree to pay for services rendered, yeah I get that, and we all feel the service has been horrible, but none of us know what stipulations and benchmarks were put in the contracts so it appears to me the team keeps Fox so they don't have to pay twice.

Fox is loyal to sorry Jake, so Jake will probably be QB next year. I will watch from home. No trips or money spent traveling to support them if Jake is running the show.

  • lec0257 Dec 28, 2009

The Panthers have no early draft picks to address the quarterback problem. Trade Peppers, since he wants to be somewhere else while you can get something for him and draft a quality quarterback.

This is the problem with our Panthers. The organization is too loyal. (cheap). You have players out there giving it their all (Smith, Beason, Double Trouble, etc), yet you have a Head Coach who MIS-MANAGES the team and the season by keeping Delhomme, stating "Jake gives us the Best chance to win". THIS IS THE TYPE OF COACH YOU WANT? Well we (The fans) don't.

We are going to miss out on great opportunity to upgrade the coaching position.

We Have the talent to win NOW! There needs to be a coach who can win at the helm.

Yes Fox has gotten us to our only Super Bowl, but I want to be a winning franchise. Can we please get consistency? Is that too much to ask for? I can't stand having up and down seasons, Fox can't put back to back "successful" seasons.

    We cannot stand for this.

    It's TIME TO MOVE ON.

Well this is not what I wanted to hear considering the rumors about Cowher possibly returning to the NFL. As long as Fox keeps Delhomme on the sidelines I really don't have a problem with him.

They have NO CHANCE at Cowher, This is why they are going this route. And there are A LOT of ifs and buts about what is going to happen after next year (owners may lock out) so this was the smart and safe move. The players seem to be behind Fox so no need to bring in somebody else with a new system. They do need a quarterback though and I am sure they will find a way to address this situation if they want to keep their jobs after this year. I know they had to have talked to Cowher, he or they must not liked what the other one had to say. Cowher will be in Tampa next year

Based on a couple of MEANINGLESS games..at least for the Panthers. While I'd love if Cowher were to go to Charlotte, I'm not ready to give up on Fox yet, at least not before his contract is up. I gave up Delhomme after about the 4th Delhommesucksday (my new name for Sunday) of the season; I will be very dissapointed if he returns, and even more dissapointed if the Panthers don't draft a QB this year.

I also thought Fox would be gone. With a much easier schedule next year he better win and get into the playoffs. Where were the wins earlier in the year. When you job is on the line you win. I for one will not be attending any more games as long as Jake is with the team. Way too much money to have a 10% chance to see a win. Bad decision to bring back Fox (in the long run)never will have back to back winning seasons, especially with Jake.

  • racinjunki Dec 28, 2009

I heard today Fox had nothing to do with keeping Jake the Snake in the starting lineup, it's in his contract. I'll bet they rethink that one before doing it again. Keep Fox, send Jake back to what he does best, BoJangles' commercials.
