Pelicans continue dominance against Carolina

Posted September 1, 2013

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans produced five runs in the first and cruised to a 9-3 win over the Carolina Mudcats on Sunday evening at TicketReturn.com Field. The Pelicans (37-32, 77-61) have won eight of nine on the Grand Strand against the Mudcats (34-35, 56-83) this summer.

Shawn Morimando (8-13) struggled with his command, walking six batters for the fifth time this season. The Pelicans took advantage by scoring seven runs on six hits. The seven runs tied a season-high allowed by the left-hander.

After Morimando was lifted two batters into the third, Owen Dew hurled three innings without allowing a run. Grant Sides pitched two scoreless.

Josh McElwee (3-2) was awarded the win after three scoreless innings in relief. Starter Nick McBride only pitched two innings, allowing two runs on four hits.

Myrtle Beach loaded the bases on two hits and a walk in the first inning. Trever Adams opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly to right and Royce Bolinger followed with a run-producing single. Hanser Alberto provided the big hit with a two-run double.

Paddy Matera and Logan Vick started a rally for the Mudcats in the second. Matera singled and moved to third on a ground-rule double by Vick. Alex Lavisky brought both runners in by chopping a single over the first baseman’s head.

The Pelicans got both runs back in the last half of the second thanks to a single from Adams and a sac-fly by Bolinger.

Vick provided the final tally for Carolina in the third inning with a single off reliever Michael Zouzalik.

Myrtle Beach produced two runs in the ninth inning off Louis Head for the final margin.

The Mudcats finish the 2013 regular season against the Pelicans on Monday, September 2nd. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. at TicketReturn.com Field in Myrtle Beach. Carolina opens the 2014 season with a home game against Potomac Nationals on Thursday, April 14, 2014.
