The Myrtle Beach Pelicans jumped out to an early lead and came away with a 5-1 win over the Carolina Mudcats on Friday night at Five County Stadium. The Pelicans (27-21, 71-45) claimed their seventh consecutive win on the road and improved to 10-5 against the Mudcats (23-24, 52-62) this year.
Adam Plutko (3-7) shouldered the loss after allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits in four innings. The right-hander fought an erratic command as he walked three and struck out five. Josh McElwee (2-0) was awarded the win with a scoreless inning in relief after starter Sam Wolff finished an inning short of qualifying for the win.
Wolff hurled four scoreless frames, allowing three hits, with one strikeout.
The Pelicans jumped on Plutko for two runs in the first inning. Chris Garia singled and moved to second after Preston Beck worked a walk. A passed ball on catcher Alex Monsalve positioned Garia at third base. He trotted home on a double to right by Nick Williams and a fielding error on Yhoxian Medina at second base allowed Beck to cross home for a 2-0 lead.
Williams added a second RBI in the third when he plated Beck from third on a force out at second base.
The Mudcats tallied their only run in the sixth against reliever Justin Sprenger. The right-hander hit Yandy Diaz with an inside pitch to open the frame and Jerrud Sabourin punched a single to right. Joe Sever drew a walk to load the bases for Todd Hankins. The center fielder bounced into a force out at second base, but Diaz scored to trim the deficit to two.
Lewis Brinson put the game away for Myrtle Beach in the eighth with a two-run homer off Benny Suarez to polish the scoring.
Carolina continues their home series against Myrtle Beach on Saturday, August 9. First pitch against the Pelicans is set for 6 p.m. The Mudcats will give away a Pub Glass presented by Sandoz prior to the game with gates opening at 5 p.m. A special fireworks show will follow Saturday’s tilt.
