Pirates on verge of bowl berth

—  At this point in the season, East Carolina may be the most well-rounded team in the state of North Carolina. The Pirates are tied with Duke for the best overall record (5-2), are 3-1 in conference play and boast quite possibly some of the most impressive games.

ECU destroyed Southern Miss Saturday at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium, 55-14, and the 14 points they allowed didn't come until garbage time of the fourth quarter when many of the subs were in. ECU dominates Southern Miss, 55-14 Slideshow: ECU dominates Southern Miss, 55-14

The defense forced turnovers, made huge stops and allowed their offense to work without any pressure. The offense, led by Shane Carden, who has been nothing short of impressive all season, reached the end zone seven times. With wide receiver Justin Hardy and running back Vintavious Cooper, the Pirates have obvious versatility in the run and pass game.

Sure the opponent Saturday wasn't anything to write home about, having not won a game all season, but the way that East Carolina efficiently played all sides of the ball was exactly what they should have done. They didn't sit back with a lesser opponent at hand, and they have showed that against greater opponent's, they will most definitely step up.

Just two weeks ago, they left the field with a huge win over North Carolina - on their home turf none-the-less. Their two losses came against Virginia Tech, which they very well could have won, and in triple overtime against Tulane.

Sure they don't play in the Atlantic Coast Conference, but they welcome those opponents every year. And NC State should be wary of the Pirates when they come to town Nov. 23.

The Pirates are averaging 7.5 yards per pass play, 10.1 yards per catch and 3 yards per rush. They have converted 71 percent of their fourth downs attempted, but with the yards they average on down one through three, they are rarely faced with that decision. The team is averaging 37 points per game, but with a defense that is only allowing 23, it makes it that much easier to see how they keep winning.

At 5-2, they are one win away from bowl eligibility. If you havenโ€™t yet, you may want to start watching some more East Carolina football because they may be one of the few teams in North Carolina that sees postseason play.
