Pirates practice amid high expectations

Posted August 2, 2013

— The East Carolina Pirates return 16 starters from a team that was 7-1 in Conference USA play a season ago but lost the tiebreaker in the division.

There were a lot of yellow jerseys at Friday's opening practice, but quarterback Shane Carden returns as the starter.

Head coach Ruffin McNeill opened the practice with a morning walk-through, and players worked out in shorts an helmets in the afternoon. The team will have single sessions through Tuesday and then three two-a-days beginning next Wednesday.

“It was a normal first day with excitement, and I liked the way guys attacked today with our visions and goals,” McNeill said. "Typically, the skill guys are slow to start, but they came out and performed at a high level, fighting through the first practice. "

ECU will close camp on Monday, Aug. 19 – the day before the fall semester begins. The Pirates, the preseason pick to be east division champs in their final season in Conference USA, host Old Dominion Aug. 31 at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.

That should be a great game like most of the recent ECU/VT games. You going to make the trip to Greenville for it?

With all of those starters returning, I definitely see them winning the Conference. They always give the Hokies a fit. I hope we can play a solid game at Greenville on Sept 14th. They always scare the heck out of me.

There are very high expectations in Greenville for this season. CUSA championship or bust from a fans standpoint. It appears other coaches are noticing the work Ruff is doing, CUSA coaches picked us to win the East, and we are receiving votes in the preseason USA Today coaches poll.

Funny you bring up recruiting Deacons. We're not officially in the American yet and, per most recruiting websites, we're doing better than WF is in the ACC.

Just a lil' buzzed smack talk Pir8s, no ill will intended. Star rankings are BS - especially in Aug.

  • 78FJ40 Aug 3, 2013

    Their 6 - 2* commits say "whaaaa?"

  • Deacons Aug 2, 2013

Their conference is terrible, they are probably the best team in it. It has to be hard to recruit players to play in that conference.

McNeil has done a terrific job at ECU - can't help but be happy for him. It wasn't an easy task to follow Skip Holtz, but McNeil has done well. ECU should have a good season with all their returning starters - hope they live up to the expectations. Still wish ECU was in the ACC, but happy they were invited to the Big East.
