Greenville, N.C. — The East Carolina Pirates return 16 starters from a team that was 7-1 in Conference USA play a season ago but lost the tiebreaker in the division.
There were a lot of yellow jerseys at Friday's opening practice, but quarterback Shane Carden returns as the starter.
Head coach Ruffin McNeill opened the practice with a morning walk-through, and players worked out in shorts an helmets in the afternoon. The team will have single sessions through Tuesday and then three two-a-days beginning next Wednesday.
“It was a normal first day with excitement, and I liked the way guys attacked today with our visions and goals,” McNeill said. "Typically, the skill guys are slow to start, but they came out and performed at a high level, fighting through the first practice. "
ECU will close camp on Monday, Aug. 19 – the day before the fall semester begins. The Pirates, the preseason pick to be east division champs in their final season in Conference USA, host Old Dominion Aug. 31 at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.
