PNC Arena getting lighting upgrade

— Fans attending Carolina Hurricanes hockey games and NC State basketball games this year will get a chance to see the sports in a whole new light, literally. PNC Arena will become the first NHL arena in the United States to feature an innovative LED lighting system called Show-Light Green.

An innovation by Musco, the lights are designed to reduce glare and create a better, more balanced playing light while creating a better experience for fans in attendance and watching on television. They are also expected to reduce energy costs at the arena by as much at 70 percent.

PNC Arena, owned by the Centennial Authority and managed by Gale Force Sports and Entertainment, opened in 1999. The cost of installation for the lights is $650,000 and will be completely covered by Centennial Authority as part of their capitol improvement budget.

"We are proud to once again partner with the PNC Arena, and provide an innovative, sustainable LED solution," said Musco Lighting's Vice President of Developmental Sales, Jeff Rogers. "Our unique system design offers superior light control to put light where it's needed to create a theater effect on the playing surface and reduce glare for players and spectators."

The lighting system will be in place in time for the Hurricanes’ preseason opener Sept. 21 against Columbus.

    With the money saved from the lighting costs perhaps that extra money can be made available to get better players THAT CAN SCORE on a regular basis. A team has got to score especially on the power play in order to win games...think the Canes management has lost sight of that fact - just thought I'd remind them!

    What an absolute embarrassment to the State of North Carolina! This conglomeration of carpet baggers should NEVER have been allowed to get their greedy hands on ANY aspect of ownership or revenue generated by ANY facility owned by the citizens of NC.
    This deal was a bunch of closed door embezzlement by our own state leaders and these crooks!
    And you wonder why we have to pay to park on our own property and a beer is 20 dollars?

    $15 to park is a joke! Makes the $7 for dwntwn events seem like a bargain! LOL Im hoping to take out a small loan so we can buy some beers this season.

    Went to PNC Arena Friday night. $15 to park!! More than I paid for 1 ticket to get in the arena. Will be my LAST trip to the P-ay NC Arena. They can have their high priced arena, but I'm not going to support them.

    Hopefully the hue of these lights will be good. The compact fluorescent they put in the concourse areas are _awful_!
