Police probe could impact Winston, Noles and ACC

Posted November 15, 2013

This week’s news that Florida State star quarterback Jameis Winston is under investigation for possible sexual misconduct may or may not have a huge impact on the Seminoles’ national championship mission, but it is almost certain to have some influence on national and regional rewards voting.

Unless or until Winston is actually convicted of wrongdoing, it will not change my judgment. Entering these last few regular-season games, Winston is my pick for the ACC player of the year and No. 1 on my Heisman Trophy pecking order.

The Duke lacrosse case should have given all of us a reminder to reserve judgment until all facts are sorted out.

But nationally, Winston is in a crowded Heisman field that includes any number of quarterbacks and at least one or two running backs in the midst of equally sensational seasons. If his image gets dented enough to keep him off only a handful of ballots the race could be tilted immediately.

The Heisman vote is also difficult. You vote for three players – No. 1 being your Heisman pick, No. 2 your runner-up and No. 3 your next favorite. It operates on a win/place/show format.

If a few voters have enough reservation about his behavior to just happen to drop Winston from No. 1 to Nos. 2 or 3, that also could be enough to keep him off the podium on Dec. 14 in New York.

The same thing is possible regionally in the All-ACC voting by members of the Atlantic Coast Media Association.
Dave Goren, executive director of ACSMA, said he expects up to 75 members to participate in the voting, which will end Dec. 1.

Winston’s primary competition for top ACC are Clemson quarterback Taj Boyd, wide-out Sammy Watkins and maybe Boston College running back Andre Williams. With less than 100 expected voters, it wouldn’t take much to turn things.

It’s important for voters to keep in mind that while Winston is under investigation by the Tallahassee police department for an alleged incident almost a year ago, he has not been charged.

There’s almost no chance he’ll be suspended by head coach Jimbo Fisher, but there’s no guarantee that the situation will not affect Winston’s concentration and consistency.

If nothing else, it definitely puts an unexpected twist on the final few weeks of an already eventful season for the quarterback and his team.

For now, here are some of my personal all-star picks entering this weekend’s schedule. Anything is subject to change as the regular season plays out, of course.

As a Seminole fan who spent the better part of last week FREAKING OUT about this accusation, it's good to hear this from fans of other teams. Seems more and more likely Winston is suffering the same fate that Cam Newton, Johnny Manziel, and Manti Teo faced in recent yeas.

The thing is, if he's charged, according to rules at FSU, he can't play - according to the discussion on the Adam and Joe show. I agree that it's BS. And I thought in America, you're innocent till proven guilty. This doesn't pass the sniff test. Something that happened a year ago is coming to light NOW, when Winston is having a spectacular year?

First off, no way in hell you`re over 55, by the lameness of your posts.

"if" (boy is that a huge if) you are over 55, No way in hell you are gonna
(out of the blue) start trashing a school you claim to have graduated
    from on a message board

And the biggest part of your pathetic trolling is that you claim K is the greatest coach of all time (which i dont have a problem with if thats you`re opinion) BUT
to claim that Dean atleasts make your top 20, OUTS you big time...

Does that clear things up for you Prof?

While you have some valid points, try reading "this" case on an actual news site,
Strictly BS from what all i have read, and yes, the timing of this is suspicious.
