QB play key for NCSU, Duke down the stretch

Posted October 14, 2013

It's the quarterback, the quarterback, the quarterback that is key for these Triangle football teams to succeed.

Right now, with Anthony Boone under center, Duke University has the best overall football TEAM in the state.

NC State, which has struggled after the early injury to Brandon Mitchell, now has two weeks to get him healthy, get the team re-geared and make a run.

i was reinforcing what you were saying...3.7yds a play on offense is HORRIBLE. thomas acts and sounds like a great guy but at the end of the day, it's all about production...he's had chances to make game changing plays, but he hasn't gotten it done. of course, the makeshift o-line consisting of 2* players and juco transfers doesn't help. when the rb's have to juke 2 guys just to get back to the line of scrimmage you know it's going to be a long day. canada has been doing what he can to mask the deficiencies up front but sooner or later they'll get exposed.

Leathem came in late and played a lot better then Thomas did, maybe it's time to give Leathem his shot at starting.

Thomas needs to sit, or have his minutes curtailed...3 td passes and 8 int's(league-leading) in 6 games is flat unacceptable, especially with the bad throws to open receivers...he missed a sure td against wf, and had 2 against Syracuse...bottom line is he has only led the team to 37 pts in 3 league games, and only one of those against top competition...the o-line didn't help him Saturday, but throwing the ball away is another skill he struggles with...let Shireffs take the bulk, and Thomas spot him, or anything other than what has been happening

Not saying they will definitely continue to improve, but slowly the recruits start trickling in once a program gains some credibility. It takes time but seems to be happening.

buckets112 95 plays is a high number of plays, but if they were not executed then, so what? Just look at the missed opportunites of the offense. The defense took the ball away 2x with the ball on Syr. side of the field and what did the offense do with it. Also, by the 4th quarter we had lost several players on defense including the person who made the 2 interceptions.

i don't know how the quickly part worked out but state ran 95 plays which is an incredibly high number even for a high tempo offense. it was the paltry 3.7yds per play that killed them.

Am I missing part of this article? The statement that QB play is critical is like saying the sun will rise in the AM. Must be a tough day finding stuff to fill the space if this is all you are going to say.

Congratulations to Coach Cut. Not a Duke fan, but love him as a person and coach. I hear all the stuff about the defense giving up the big runs Saturday, but State still should have won. The quarterback either over threw touchdown passes, under threw passes which would have given 1st and goal. If the no huddle is suppose to go quickly, they didn't for the most part Saturday. Could have caught Syr. with players trying to get off the field 10 or more times. 5 yards is 5 yards. Quarterback too slow in getting rid of the ball, not seeing players open too many times. Not the defense that cost that game.

Get used to seeing this. Cut has far exceeded my expectations for the turnaround and his timing could not have been better with the way things have gone for the other in-state conference schools...

No argument that Boone being back under center is huge for Duke's quest to make back-to-back bowls. I was equally impressed with Duke's D against Navy. This is probably one of the best games Duke played in the Coach Cut era.
