Racer Riggs carries on winning tradition

Posted December 24, 2013

— For many families, Christmas is a time to revisit tradition. And for the Riggs family from Bahama, the tradition is racing.

Scott Riggs, who has driven in NASCAR's Sprint Cup series since 2004, is tracking the success of his son, 11-year-old Layne.

Layne competes at Orange County Speedway, where he tends to be the youngest driver on the track but among one of the fastest.

"It's just fun," he said. "I just get a feeling, and it's just my passion. ... Baseball, basketball, all that. I never really liked that stuff all that much. I feel like this is something different, and I really do like it."

At an age when many kids are still driving toys, Layne Riggs is driving cars and beating grown-ups.

"It was kind of intimidating, because I didn't know what to expect," Layne said. "I see 'em out there, beating and banging. I was just kind of nervous the first race."

Then he won three of the five races he ran this fall.

"Blowing all of our expectations this year has really made us start to think about what's going to keep him challenged," Scott Riggs said of his son. "We thought this was going to be a couple years and instead it's been a couple of months."

Both Layne and his dad are looking ahead. "I'm having fun," the young racer said. "But also I am looking into the future. I want to drive this, I want to drive that."
