Cary, N.C. — The Carolina RailHawks (3W-1T-0L, 10pts) defeated Minnesota United (1W-1T-2L, 4pts) 1-0 to remain in first place in the NASL Fall Season standings. Brian Shriver registered his NASL leading 12th goal of the year in the 52nd minute of play. On Kicks for Kids Night presented by PNC Bank, the crowd of 5,201 at WakeMed Soccer Park witnessed the RailHawks extend their home unbeaten streak to 12 matches (11W-1T-0L).
“Tonight was a good result,” said RailHawks head coach Colin Clarke. “We have done a good job this evening and I am delight that we got another clean sheet. Overall it was a great result and another three points.”
The RailHawks opened the scoring in the 52nd minute when a string of passes and eventual cross from Cesar Elizondo found Shriver open on the back post to convert the chance. The run of play began with Elizondo collecting the ball at midfield from a defensive clearance. Forward Zack Schilawski ended up with the ball at his feet and played a perfectly timed ball back to Elizondo breaking down the right flank. Elizondo took a touch and with Shriver rushing to the back post played a curling ball across the mouth of the goal for Shriver to finish his 3rd goal in his last two matches.
Minnesota found their best chance in the 27th minute when a poor back pass to RailHawks goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald was intercepted by Minnesota’s Pablo Campos. Campos dribbled towards goal, but Fitzgerald rushed off his goal-line to deny Campos and any chance of Minnesota grabbing the lead.
