RailHawks top LA Galaxy 1-0 in overtime

An overtime goal gave the Carolina RailHawks a 1-0 win over the LA Galaxy in the fifth round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Tuesday at Wake Med Soccer Park's Koka Booth Stadium.

After a 0-0 tie at the end of regulation, RailHawks Nick Zimmerman found Daniel Jackson on a breakaway up the middle for a goal in the first overtime period.

"It was a lot of emotion," said Jackson. "It was my first goal in open play. It was awesome, it was a great feeling."

Jackson's goal in the 105th minute gave Carolina the lead heading into the second 15-minute overtime. The Galaxy dominated play in the second overtime but could not steal a goal from RailHawks, and former North Carolina, goalie Scottie Goodwin.

This marks the third year in a row that Carolina has defeated the LA Galaxy but this time it was with the squad's number one team – as both Robbie Keane and Landon Donovan traveled with the team.

"They've been here twice before and they got beat and it hurt," said RailHawks head coach Colin Clarke. "So they said, this time they were going to go there to win – we're going to bring our first team. And it didn't happen. I'll have a couple of cold ones tonight and they'll taste very, very good believe me."

LA took hold of the game early, maintaining control of the ball in first half of play. The pro squad couldn't manage a score forcing head coach Bruce Arena to sub in Donovan in the 64th minute. Donovan got a chance with point-blank range in the 82nd minute but Goodwin turned away the MLS's all-time leading scorer.

"Unbelievable moment," said Goodwin. "But at the moment you're not really thinking about that, you're not thinking about who's shooting it. It's just get your hand to the ball if you can, that's about it."

The RailHawks best chance to score in regulation came at the end of stoppage time on a Jackson breakaway down the right side that LA goalie Jamie Penedo tipped just wide.

Around 3,000 fans took in the RailHawks victory on Field 2 as the main field is being re-sodded.

With the win, Carolina advances to the quarterfinals of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and will host FC Dallas on July 9.

It's a shame the 2015 expansion team went to Atlanta. Of course, I would love it if the MLS adopted a relegation/promotion style structure as in Europe. I think that alone would help talent discovery immensely.

I'd have said spoken like a true fool. I bet that troll doesn't even watch soccer.

The Railhawks are wonderful to see.

Nice win Railhawks! Great job. Oh to see them have the opportunity to promote to MLS.

What a game. Lots of tense moments but the win was sweet. Yes, this isn't WC level play but it's still competitive. I even got close enough for a fist pump from Landon. Not washing that hand. haha

More proof that the soccer happening right here in the triangle is as good as MLS

Duh, of course they're not the same level of World Cup. However, RailHawks soccer is very entertaining and it is good for them to get a 3rd straight win over the Galaxy especially when they brought their actual team this time.

Yawn, 1-0. I'll go back to watching the real soccer players in the World Cup action. These guys looked slow and sloppy after watching the WC players.
