Raleigh's Hadley trying to 'keep it simple' in first year on Tour

— Thursday afternoon, Raleigh native Chesson Hadley will tee off in just his sixth ever PGA Tour event and first in the 2014 calendar year. After his practice round Wednesday, he said that this year is all about keeping it simple.

“The great thing about golf is that it is no different on the Web.com Tour or the PGA Tour,” Hadley said. “The courses may be tougher and the competition is obviously tougher, but the shots are the same. I’m just trying to keep it simple.”

This is Hadley’s first full season holding a Tour card, capping last year by winning the Web.com Tour Championship as his second victory of the year. His $535,432 in total earnings were the second-best single-season total in Web.com Tour history.

Now with two tournaments under his belt this season, including a top-5 finish in which he went head-to-head with fellow Raleigh native Webb Simpson, confidence is running high in the Hadley camp.

“You can’t just say, ‘I’m going to go out there and win,’” Hadley said. “It’s a process. Last year I was blessed to be there a couple times and the more you are there the easier it gets.”

Supported by his wife, Amanda, and a new baby boy who travel to nearly every event, the up-and-comer said that the family routine on the road is something that helps him during the grind of a golf season.

“Having them out here with me is nice because it’s structured,” he said. “It’s not like I would go out and get crazy or anything, but Amanda provides stability."

Hadley, being new to the Tour, also said that he still hangs out with a bunch of Web.com Tour players and some guys he grew up playing with. Riding back to his hotel Wednesday night, he was seated next to Duke graduate Wes Roach, who will also be teeing it up at Waialae Country Club Thursday.

Other golfers with Triangle ties playing in this weekend's Sony Open in Honolulu include NC State’s Carl Pettersson and Tim Clark, UNC’s Mark Wilson, Campbell’s Brad Fritsch, and Cary native Brendon Todd. Ranked 101 in the world, only Clark among the group boasts a higher ranking (70) than Hadley.

Hadley will tee off Thursday at 1:20 p.m. Hawaiian (6:20 p.m. EST). You can follow his thoughts and everyday happenings at his blog, HadsCorner.com.
