Rodon strikes out 15 in 1-0 NC State loss

Posted April 25, 2014

— Carlos Rodon recorded 15 punchouts in a complete game, but NC State baseball fell 1-0 to visiting Georgia Tech on Friday night at Doak Field at Dail Park.

Rodon (3-7) fanned 10 of the first 11 batters he faced. Georgia Tech (26-17, 12-10 ACC) did not put a ball in play for the first three innings. The junior lefthander’s no-hit bid was broken up with two outs in the fourth, on a single up the middle. The Yellow Jackets scored the game’s lone run on a two-out RBI single to right center in the sixth. Rodon went the distance, holding Tech to one earned on six hits and two walks.

Rodon’s 15 strikeouts come one shy of his career high, 16 set against Florida Atlantic on March 2, 2013. For his career, Rodon has 413 strikeouts, the fourth most in ACC history. Rodon became the first Wolfpacker, and fourth player in ACC history to cross 400 on Friday night. Rodon has 17 double-digit strikeout performances in his career.

With 94 strikeouts for the season, Rodon climbs into a tie with Maryland’s Jake Stinnett for tops in the ACC. His 15 strikeouts are a season high, marking the third time this year that Rodon has eclipsed 12 in a start.

The Wolfpack (23-18, 7-15) struggled at the plate all night long. The Pack accounted for three baserunners on the evening. Jake Fincher provided the State’s only extra-base hit, a leadoff double in the fifth. Trea Turner and Logan Ratledge each contributed one single.

NC State returns to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. for a game televised on RSN.

If you can't score, I don't care how good the pitching is you will not win. Crazy how this team can't give Rodon any runs almost ever.

Rodon can't wait to leave early to the Pros.

Pretty sure it has something to do with that round building on campus. This seems to confirm its haunted.

Again, zero bat support... Give up 1 run and lose?

  • wlcat609 Apr 26, 2014

State went from a preseason number 5 ranked team to no where on the charts at this point.

And although Rodon has pitched very well, I suspect that State's losing as a team will cost Rodon to drop in the college draft and, if so, it will cost him lots of money as well. Only time will tell where he'll get drafted - and, who knows, if is lower than expected, you may see him back pitching for NCSU next season!

One earned run, 15 K's, a CG, & gets the loss. If you're a pitcher, you gotta be upset about getting tagged with an L after a performance like that. But hey, credit to the Jackets as well. They were up to the challenge & got it done when they had to.

what a shameful waste of talent ... I hope Rodon still has an arm and a pro career when he leaves the hapless aggies

    Batting an issue this year

  • bigfella Apr 26, 2014

Too bad there isn't an NIT for baseball, because State's season ends without even making the ACC tourney

Kidd hasn't got much run support the entire year.
